No, But Seriously, Dove Soap Is Bad

The Concourse

So yesterday, BuzzFeed's editors, in a super duper blatant breach of the tenets of their Editorial Standards And Ethics Guide, deleted a post in which staff writer Arabelle Sicardi criticized toiletries brand Dove for its sleazy, exploitative advertising. … And That’s the Story of That

by Crunchy Betty @ Crunchy Betty

I noticed that the world would go on without me. It would change despite my input; it’s always changing, it doesn’t need me as much as I thought it did. There was never any reason to believe my worries, not a single reason at all.

Now – RIGHT NOW – became the only thing to live for. All the secrets whispered in the present moment, all of the salves to heal the wounds were there.

Ditch the Tampons and Switch to a DivaCup (Sexy? Right!)

by Crunchy Betty @ Crunchy Betty

It all started a few months ago with the discussion in the Crunchy Community, that lovely Lula Lola titled "Tampon Talk (Sexy, right?).

Scratch that.

It all started two years ago when my sister said, "You should really try the DivaCup," and I said, "Huh. Weird." And every month, I'd think about it, but then I'd look at the price of a DivaCup ($30) compared to a the price of a box of tampons ($7), and I'd say, "Next month. I'll get one next month when we have more money."

Clearly, I am not very good at understanding substantial long-term savings, because you don't throw the DivaCup away. Not for years.

And then the conversation happened in the Community, and I couldn't wait to try it. I couldn't wait another month. (So I asked DivaCup if they'd like a review, and the sales representative said, "Sure! And how about a giveaway!" And I said, "Sure! And how about you're awesome!")

Your Stories: Awesome Products for my Children & Me

by @ Ida's Soap Box

WOW! I know seems silly to start off with, but I just received my order of your shampoo and body soaps yesterday, and like a little kid waiting for Christmas morning I COULD NOT WAIT to take a shower last night to try some of them out on myself and my 2 year old son. First off, let me say the size of the bars is WONDERFUL! I was not blessed with little hands, so the larger bars are fantastic for me!

As for my son, he thought that they were the neatest thing he's ever seen he immediately started rubbing himself down with the Goat Milk and Honey bar - almost like he instinctively knew that this was good for his skin! He held onto the soap like his life depended on it - ha! I had to negotiate with him to get it out of his hands to continue his bath!

Then came the Carrot Milk and Honey shampoo bar - and WOW! It lathers incredibly, washes out so nicely, but most of all didn't irritate him whatsoever! After drying him off I could NOT believe how soft his skin was and his hair also!!! He's been battling dryness since birth and I have tried relentlessly to find something - anything - to help alleviate the tightness and dryness for him - well, I found it!!

To top it off I also ordered to whipped shea butter and decided to give it a whirl on him - and holy cow, FANTABULOUS is all I have to say! It melts so dreamy with the warmth of your skin, and left him smelling AMAZING and most importantly moisturized! The cutest thing that prompted this email was as I was applying the shea butter onto him, he kept saying "momma, cream so nice" - he has never uttered those words after I've applied lotion to him after a bath - NEVER!

Then it was my turn to try all these treats out! I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the shampoo bars lather and cleaned my hair - I colour my hair, yet after using the shampoo bar my hair has never felt softer and more manageable (Ha - I sound like a commercial!). The soap bars are to die for! I came out of the shower without any tightness or dryness - I actually felt comfortable in my skin! I then tried the whipped shea butter in the Earth Blend scent - OMG! Heavenllllyyy! I LOVE the smell! So clean yet grounding, if that makes sense? I decided to use it not only on my dry patches, but my face as well, and funny thing, my husband thought I had bought a new perfume and was raving about it! That being said it's not super smelly, so no worries to those reading this that someone can smell you from a mile away, you can't - it's more that when the scent warms to your skin, it's a smell like nothing I've experienced, subtle yet still there -yummy!!!

Anyway, I had to share my story with you, and thank you for making a product that it not only good for the hair and skin, but good for children! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making these wonderful products!

A new and now loyal lifer to Chagrin Valley!

Christine, Canada

Chemicals in Skin Care Products, Natural Skin Care Products

by @ Alabu Skin Care: Latest News

There are many harmful and toxic chemicals like mercury, alcohol and ammonium laureth sulfate that make it into skin care products even though the FDA regulates the industry. These sorts of toxins are absorbed into your skin and are not easy to get rid of. This is a great reason why natural skin care products should always be used. Avoid using harmful ingredients that are found in regular skincare products and your skin will have less redness, irritation, breakouts and allergic reactions.

For-Giving & Forgiveness: Food For Your Soul

by Crunchy Betty @ Crunchy Betty

'Tis the season of giving. Giving, buying, making, giving, giving, giving.

We get so caught up in the giving (and in the stress of finding the right giving to give) that we forget about the other kind of giving. The kind that really matters. For-giving. Forgiving.

Especially when we're all cramped together with family we love, but who've really done some pretty stinky things in the past. Your brother Kyle? Remember when he picked on your weight? And your mom? Jeezopee, how she made everything about her, even when you were crying about the boy who wouldn't kiss you. And maybe your husband hasn't been so honest about money this year. UGH. WHAT A JERK.

In the time of closeness and sharing and proximity that may last a few hours too long, it's about darned time we learned to forgive. Actually, maybe it's time we learn to forgive ... all year 'round. Every resplendent day.

Inspired by a (ahem) true-ish story, I give you one of Crunchy Betty's patented magnificently artistic stick-drawing stories of why you should think about being FOR-giving. Right now. And forever and ever. Amen.

Dove releases new soap bottles that look like very weird human bodies

Dove releases new soap bottles that look like very weird human bodies

News

In recent years, Dove has posited itself as the progressive soap manufacturer of choice, marketing its products in campaigns couched in critiques of the shallow, unrealistic advertising often used to sell things to women. Using natural lighting, documentary-style filmmaking, and a lack of Photoshopped images, Dove ads have invited women to discuss beauty, engineered stunts that involve them suddenly realizing how beautiful they are, hacked stock images, and celebrated imperfect motherhood. Many catch a whiff of these and correctly determine it all to be the cynical maneuvering of a corporate behemoth to co-opt increasingly mainstream progressive attitudes in order to sell soap.

How to Keep a Natural Litter Box and Other Cat-Related Nonsense

by Crunchy Betty @ Crunchy Betty

Did you know that you can train a cat to use a toilet? It's a real thing, and real cats who have brains can do this; they don't even need opposable thumbs or current issues of National Geographic. They are just fine with back issues.

I'm thinking about doing this with my cat, but given our recent interactions, it will just give him one more reason to sit on my head. Here are his other reasons: he's hungry, or I'm asleep, or it's less than 86.5 degrees outside, or I'm breathing.

But let's be honest, there's really only one natural litter box, and it happens to be "the earth." While I do sometimes feel in my heart that cats would be happier (and our personal waste would be less) if they were just allowed to roam free about the neighborhood, many neighbors would highly disagree. Mountain lions around here, on the other hand, have engaged in a sign-waving "Free the House Cats" protest on street corners.

It isn't going very well. Mountain lions have terrible handwriting.

I'm not convinced that all house cats want to be outside. My friend has two cats who are allowed to do anything they want, including feasting on all the butterflies they can find in the backyard, but all they do is sit around in the sunroom, drinking tea and reading the newspaper while commenting on current events.

DIY Hyssop Face Mask Recipe for (Naturally) Gorgeous Skin

by Crunchy Betty @ Crunchy Betty

There's this magical box that lives in my "crunchy corner." In it are wonders ne'er before seen, like unicorns and fairies and men who ask for directions.

Just kidding, men. (You'd never fit in this box.)

Actually, what's in this box are small baggies full of herbs and roots and flowers and resins. Every so often, when I go to our local natural food store, I'll pick up an herb that I've recently learned about, but never worked with. I bring it home, smell it, touch it, and occasionally just toss it in the box and forget about it. Not for lack of interest, but more for an abundance of distractions.

You know how it goes. There's always bread to be made, dishes to be washed, friends to be served tea, or cats to be dressed up like German barmaids. Priorities.

About a month ago, as I was planning a few of the plants I'm going to grow in my new rooftop garden, I ran into hyssop seeds. (Isn't that just about the prettiest word you've ever seen? Hyssop. Hyssop. Hyssop.) And while I was familiar with it, I remembered that it was an herb I'd tossed into the box a few months before.
