Tom Brady Seen Linking Arms with Teammates During the National Anthem Following Trump’s Controversial Comments

Tom Brady Seen Linking Arms with Teammates During the National Anthem Following Trump’s Controversial Comments

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Tom Brady was seen linking arms with his New England Patriots teammates during the national anthem at their Sunday afternoon game against the Houston Texans.

Patriots reporter for the Providence Journal Mark Daniels also noted that lots of defensive players chose to take a knee.

On Sunday morning, Brady subtly showed his support for the NFL players’ protest following Donald Trump’s recent comments about how professional athletes like Colin Kaepernick — who have chosen to protest the national anthem by taking a knee — should be fired.

Brady posted a picture of him and his teammate James White captioned, “Strength. Passion. Love. Brotherhood. Team. Unity. Commitment. Dedication. Determination. Respect. Loyalty. Work.”

Brady also commented on a photo posted by Aaron Rogers — which featured the Green Bay Packers quarterback kneeling with other players — with a flexing arm emoji.

Brady said last October that he considers Trump a friend.

The two met in 2002 — just as Brady claimed his first Super Bowl title, reports CBS Sports. He was hired by Trump’s organization as a judge on the Miss USA pageant, and the two have remained supportive of one another through the years.

“I met him probably 15, 16 years ago,” Brady said of Trump. “We’ve played golf together many, many times and I’ve always had a good time with him. He’s been a friend of mine.”

During a rally speech in Alabama on Friday, Trump stated, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, ‘Get that son of a b–ch off the field right now. Out, you’re fired.’”

He followed this up by pouring more gasoline on the fire with a series of tweets. “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect…our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem,” he wrote. “If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

Numerous celebrities — including Stevie Wonder, Diddy and Uzo Aduba — have also joined in standing behind the players, using the #TakeAKnee hashtag on social media.

On Sunday, multiple players on both the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars took a knee during the national anthem during a game in London. Others, including coaches, linked arms on the sideline in solidarity.

New England Patriots owner Robert Craft, who is considered an ally of Trump and even gave him a Super Bowl LI ring, issued a statement on Sunday about how he was “disappointed” in the president.

“I am deeply disappointed by the tone of the comments made by the President on Friday,” Kraft said.  “I am proud to be associated with so many players who make such tremendous contributions in positively impacting our communities.”

“Their efforts, both on and off the field, help bring people together and make our community stronger. There is no greater unifier in this country than sports, and unfortunately, nothing more divisive than politics,” he continued. “I think our political leaders could learn a lot from the lessons of teamwork and the importance of working together toward a common goal. Our players are intelligent, thoughtful and care deeply about our community and I support their right to peacefully affect social change and raise awareness in a manner that they feel is most impactful.”

How to Balance a Full-Time Job and a Part-Time Freelance Business

How to Balance a Full-Time Job and a Part-Time Freelance Business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Starting a “side-hustle” has grown in popularity over the past few years, and it’s easy to understand why.  Maintaining a full-time job while pursuing a passion project on the side offers the best of both worlds: a steady paycheck and benefits along with the opportunity to make a little extra money doing something you love. And while there’s a lot to gain when starting a side-hustle, there’s also a lot of sacrifice. Here at Elle & Company, we know a thing or two about balancing a full-time job and a “side hustle.” I worked a few different 9-5 jobs while I worked to get my business up and running, and both of my assistants currently work full-time jobs while helping me with Elle & Company part-time. All three of us understand the time and energy that goes into balancing a full-time job and a part-time passion project.  So we rounded up some practical ways that we’ve been able to keep our heads above water and maintain our sanity in the process.

11 Crafty Ways to Repurpose Old Content

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Content creation is at the heart of Elle & Company.  Between blog posts, weekly newsletters, Ellechats, social media posts, and Library additions, I spend a lot of time pumping out new content each week. But here’s the thing about new content: it has a shelf life. Newsletters get buried in inboxes. Blog posts get buried in archives. Social media posts quickly fade away from the feeds of your followers. Webinars end.  The content you create (along with the time and energy you put into them) quickly gets buried under your newer content. But don’t be fooled; you didn’t labor in vain!  Enter, the art of repurposing content.

This isn’t a normal Elle & Company blog post.   In a normal Elle & Company blog post, I share strategies and write about topics after I’ve already had time to experiment and figure out what works.   But after reading your replies to my annual survey a month or two ago, I saw that you want to see things as they’re happening. PEOPLE Explains: Who Is Meghan Markle’s Handsome Invictus Games Seatmate Markus Anderson?

PEOPLE Explains: Who Is Meghan Markle’s Handsome Invictus Games Seatmate Markus Anderson?

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

Although Prince Harry didn’t sit with girlfriend Meghan Markle at the opening ceremony for his Invictus Games in Toronto, the actress was accompanied by her pal Markus Anderson.

Markle, 36, frequently leaned into Anderson as they enjoyed The Tenors performance on Saturday, sometimes pulling the purple leather jacket that was loosely around her shoulders around her.

Want to know more about Markle’s handsome escort? Get to know Anderson below.

1. Anderson Reportedly Introduced Markle to Harry

According to the Daily Mail, Markle and Harry were brought together by her “closest friend in the world,” Anderson, back in May 2016.

The 33-year-old royal confirmed the relationship news the following November in a rare statement slamming the racist and sexist abuse she had reportedly endured since her relationship with him was revealed.

The duo have traveled around the world, including trips to Africa and Jamaica, and attended Pippa Middleton’s wedding reception together in May.

2. Anderson Works a Swanky Job

Anderson works as a consultant for the Soho House Group, a private members’ club with locations around the globe. He assisted in opening the first Canadian location in downtown Toronto, and he and the Suits star have reportedly run in the same social circle for years.

3. Markle and Anderson Vacationed in Spain Last Year

The close pals jetted to Madrid in August 2016, and Markle couldn’t resist posting a slew of photos on Instagram.

“Gracias #madrid,” the actress captioned a photo with Anderson. “It’s been many moons since I lived here and I’m loving it even more than before.”

4. Markle Has Sung His Praises Multiple Times on Social Media As Well

Vacations aren’t the only time Anderson has made appearances on the actress’ Instagram. The duo have documented their many dinners, get-togethers and just pictures of them goofing off.

“What would I do without you, my loving, supportive, and endlessly fun friend??” Markle wrote in a post celebrating her pal’s birthday in August 2016. “I know what….I would be bored, and life would be infinitely less interesting. I love you SO much.”

5. His Go-To Drink Is Champagne or Beer

The Canadian told Coveteur, “Although I’m prone to drink almost anything, I’m partial to either champagne or beer—I grew up in Ontario, after all.”

‘This Is a Mass Casualty Situation’: 1 Dead and Multiple People Injured After Gunman Opens Fire in Nashville Church

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

One person was killed and seven others were wounded during a shooting at a church in Antioch, Tennessee, on Sunday morning.

Metro Nashville Police announced on Twitter that a shooter opened fire at Church of Christ Burnette Chapel. They said that one woman died and an additional six people were shot, with another person wounded by being pistol whipped.

The Nashville Fire Department said “all of the wounded except for one is over the age of 60.”

“This is a mass casualty situation. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals,” the department said. “The majority are older adults.”

The shooter was also wounded and taken to a hospital, police said.

Bill Hunter, a former minister of the church, told Tennessean reporter Natalie Allison, “A fella walked in, sat down in a seat and pulled out a pistol and started shooting.”

A woman living next door to the church told WKRN two people came up to her door and said, “Someone is shooting at us at the church.” Her husband went to the church and saw a victim that had been shot in the back.

These 10 High-End Beauty Products Are Rarely on Sale - So Snap Them Up Before It's Too Late

Beauty lovers know the struggle that is wanting all the luxury beauty products … but never being able to find them on sale. While you can almost always find a pair of designer jeans, sneakers, handbags and more heavily discounted at every retailer, the same can’t be said for high-end makeup, skincare and hair products.

But thankfully, Macy’s was feeling particularly generous this week and has tons of high-end, normally-excluded beauty brands in its 15% off VIP sale happening right now through September 25.

Looking for more style content? Click here to subscribe to the PeopleStyle Newsletter for amazing shopping discounts, can’t-live-without beauty products and more.

On top of giving shoppers up to an extra 30% off designer pieces that rarely go on sale, Macy’s is also discounting almost all of its beauty offerings from brands that you never find in the clearance aisle, including M.A.C, Urban Decay, Laura Mercier and more for 15% off when you use the code “VIP” at checkout. We won’t make you wait another second to check out the products that we’re shocked to see on sale and will definitely be adding to our shopping carts.

But when Poppy isn’t snoozing, Berkus, 44, and husband Jeremiah Brent, 31, keep her busy with poolside play dates that are a far cry from a formal outdoor gathering.

“Our home is now filled with blow up toys from Target in the pool as opposed to margaritas,” Berkus said.

And the menu planning is even simpler.

“We throw food on the barbecue, we’ve actually even had a taco truck come once,” Berkus said. “We do put out snacks for the little ones, and they sit and throw them in the pool.”

Thomas Rhett Is Excited to Celebrate Christmas with Kids: Last Year ‘Was Literally Me, My Wife and 2 Dogs’

by Mark Gray @ PEOPLE.com

Thomas Rhett has belted out a lot of songs in his career, but his newest single “Life Changes” is probably the most apropos.

On Aug. 12, he and his wife Lauren Akins welcomed daughter Ada James. Just a few months prior, the couple adopted their daughter, Willa Gray, now 22-months-old.

How’s that for life changes?

“Last Christmas it was literally me and my wife and two dogs, and this Christmas is going to be my wife, two dogs and two kids,” he told PEOPLE at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas on Saturday. “I would say that’s the most massive change on the planet.”

“It’s hard,” he said of juggling new fatherhood (times two!) and touring,”but Lauren has been so amazing.”

In fact, his wife flew to Los Angeles on Friday with the children to surprise him during his show at The Greek, which he says “is not an easy flight with two kids under 2.”

Like we said, life changes.

“I meet people in meet and greet and people will say, ‘I know that that story is your story, but I kind of replace things that happen in my life and sing the chorus and it makes sense for all of us,'” Rhett said. “That’s one the things I thrive on as a songwriter is trying to make it as personal as I can and have it relate to as many people as humanly possible.”

10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Whether you’ve been in business for 2 years or 2 minutes, you know that being an entrepreneur requires a slew of skills.  You have to be a salesperson, a marketer, an accountant, a project manager, a designer, a social media expert, a researcher, and a copywriter - all while being an expert in your particular field.  And you’re probably willingly (yet hesitantly) diving into all of those roles because you have a product, service, or idea that you enjoy and believe in. But in order to get clients and customers to pay attention to you and purchase your great product or service, you have to be able to communicate about it. You have to write about it in a way that’s genuine and persuasive. Emails, blog posts, headlines, bios, sales pages, social media updates - being an entrepreneur means you’re constantly having to write new copy for your brand and your business. But here’s the thing: Most of us aren’t trained copywriters.  We haven’t had a copywriting pro sit down with us one-on-one and teach us how to write in a way that’s concise, compelling, and personable. And if you’re anything like me, you might also have some serious resistance to promoting yourself and selling your products.  But copywriting doesn’t have to be quite so painstaking and overwhelming.  These 10 simple copywriting tricks will help you clearly communicate about your business in a way that resonates with people and encourages them to take action.

If I Were Starting My Business from Scratch, This Would Be My Game Plan

If I Were Starting My Business from Scratch, This Would Be My Game Plan

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

So you want to start a business.   You have a ton of motivation and excitement at first, but all of a sudden reality sets in.    There are so many tasks involved, the majority of which you’ve never tackled before. You’re way out of your comfort zone, overwhelmed by all the things that need to get done.    Where do you even begin?   When you’re first starting out, it can be difficult to see the forest through the trees.   When I first started Elle & Company, I found myself piecing together all that I thought needed to get done (forgetting a bunch of steps along the way).    I longed for a step-by-step list of what to conquer and when.   Now, three and a half years into running my online business, I’ve had time to reflect on what worked and what I could’ve done differently to save time (and stress).   So I’m paying it forward. I’ve created a step-by-step list of what to focus on when you’re trying to get your business off the ground.   If I were to go back and start Elle & Company from scratch, here’s what my game plan would look like.

Kate Hudson and Boyfriend Danny Fujikawa Have a Sparkly Date Night at the Premiere of Her New Movie

Kate Hudson and Boyfriend Danny Fujikawa Have a Sparkly Date Night at the Premiere of Her New Movie

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Kate Hudson and her musician boyfriend Danny Fujikawa looked stunning at the New York City premiere of Hudson’s new film Marshall on Saturday.

Attending the movie screening at the Urbanworld Film Festival, Hudson, 38, shimmered in a silver Stella McCartney one-shoulder dress. Meanwhile Fujikawa opted for an all-black ensemble.

Marshall is an upcoming biopic about Thurgood Marshall and his rise to the United States Supreme Court.

RELATED VIDEO: Sealed With a Kiss! Kate Hudson & Boyfriend Danny Fujikawa Make Their Couple Debut at ‘Snatched’ Premiere

In July, Hudson debuted her new buzz cut in Los Angeles on the set of her movie Sister, which singer/songwriter Sia wrote and is directing.

When asked in Cosmopolitan‘s October issue about her post-workout beauty secrets, Hudson’s humorously replied: “Shaving your head. Cuts down on time spent post-sweat.”

Hudson and Fujikawa made their red carpet debut in May after attending the premiere of Hudson’s mother’s movie Snatched in Westwood, California, together.

Romance rumors first started after the pair were spotted kissing during an L.A. lunch date in March.

Since then, the couple has been spotted all over the world. From going for a night out in N.Y.C. to celebrating Hudson’s birthday together in L.A., and even to Cambodia, where the couple took a trip together in June.

It appears Fujikawa fits right into Hudson’s hipster lifestyle. “Kate’s a free spirit who has always been attracted to musicians,” a source previously told PEOPLE. “But Danny also appeals to her because he is talented, bright and cosmopolitan like she is.”

Added the source at the time, “Kate’s enjoying herself. At this point it’s not serious.”

Marshall will hit theaters on Oct. 13.

Feeling burnt out? 3 ways to bring the spark back to your business

Feeling burnt out? 3 ways to bring the spark back to your business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Confession: I used to be extremely critical of burnout. I would come across posts on the topic when I first started Elle & Company and thought the writers were being a tad bit overdramatic. If you’re doing what you love, can you really ever become burnt out? It was at a time in my business where I had a ton of motivation. I had a clear goal that I was working toward - creating a full-time business off of my love of design - and I was willing to work 10+ hours a day to get there. The momentum continued to increase as I saw some success in my business. Clients started to come rolling in, my blog was growing exponentially, and I started to offer more products and services. I hit my stride… ...and then recently, I hit a wall. The early mornings, late nights, and no vacations finally caught up with me. That was a month or two ago. Since then I’ve realized that burnout is a real thing.  And after some reflection and time off, I’ve discovered 3 simple things that can help you conquer burnout and bring some spark back to your business.

But in the grand scheme of things, design is only a fraction of what I do as a business owner. Even if you aren’t a graphic designer, you can probably relate to the feelings of overwhelm and self-doubt when you entered into the world of entrepreneurship and learned that many of the tasks you do each day don’t have anything to do with your field of expertise. Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

NFL Re-Airing ‘Unity’ Ad Following Donald Trump’s Controversial Comments About Players

by Tierney McAfee @ PEOPLE.com

The NFL is taking a united stand after President Donald Trump called for the firing of basketball and football stars like Colin Kaepernick who have chosen to protest the national anthem by taking a knee.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has announced that the league will re-air a unity television advertisement on Sunday night following Trump’s controversial comments over the weekend.

“We will air this Unity spot in tonight’s game,” Goodell said in a tweet on Sunday afternoon. “It reflects the unifying force of our great game, our players & clubs.”

An NFL spokesman added to CNN, “We think this is the single best response to demonstrate what we are about. It stands in stark contrast to some who practice the politics of division.”

The one-minute ad, called “Inside These Lines,” first ran during February’s Super Bowl and will be re-aired during Sunday night’s game between the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins.

The spot shows images of football players embracing each other while a narrator says, “Inside these lines, we don’t have to come from the same place to help each other reach the same destination.”

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

The move comes after Trump, at a rally for Alabama Republican Senate candidate Luther Strange on Friday, said he thought NFL team owners should fire players who have protested the national anthem.

RELATED: United They Kneel: Over 100 Players Protest Donald Trump’s Controversial Comments During the National Anthem

He doubled down on his comments in a series of tweets on Saturday and Sunday, saying NFL players “should not be allowed to disrespect … our Great American Flag,” and encouraging NFL fans to boycott games in counter-protest.

He added that he thought locking arms would be an acceptable form of protest but that “kneeling is not acceptable.”

Goodell previously said that president’s remarks about the NFL demonstrated “an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL.”

Steelers Are a No-Show on Field During National Anthem Following Donald Trump’s NFL Tirade

Steelers Are a No-Show on Field During National Anthem Following Donald Trump’s NFL Tirade

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

As the national anthem played before Sunday’s game, no Pittsburgh Steelers were on the sideline.

The Steelers players stayed in the locker room during the “Star-Spangled Banner” prior to their game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, with only the coaches present on the field. Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, a veteran who served in the army, stood just outside of the tunnel entrance to the field alone with his hand over his heart.

Head coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports about the team’s plans before the game.

“We’re not participating in the anthem today, not to be disrespectful to the anthem – to remove ourselves from this circumstance,” he said. “People shouldn’t have to choose. If a guy wants to go about his normal business and participate in the anthem, he shouldn’t be forced to choose sides. If a guy feels the need to do something, he shouldn’t be separated from his teammate who chooses not to.”

Before facing off in London, multiple players on both the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars took a knee during the national anthem on Sunday.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan, the only minority owner in the NFL, stood and linked arms with players Marcedes Lewis and Telvin Smith.

Tom Brady shared a photo on Instagram Sunday showing him and teammate James White during a game, subtly showing support for the movement.

“Strength. Passion. Love. Brotherhood. Team. Unity. Commitment. Dedication. Determination. Respect. Loyalty. Work,” he captioned the image, adding the hashtag #nflplayer.

Brady also reacted to a photo posted by Aaron Rodgers, which featured the Green Bay Packers quarterback kneeling with other players. The five-time Super Bowl champion commented with a simple arm flexing emoji.

According to ESPN, several Miami Dolphins players donned ‘IMWITHKAP’ shirts ahead of their game against the New York Jets.

In August 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines — and sparked a movement — when he took a knee during the national anthem.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Numerous celebrities — including Diddy — have also joined in standing behind the players, causing a resurgence of the #TakeAKnee hashtag on social media.

Jennifer Lopez Joins People En Español & Telemundo in NYC For TV Special To Help Victims of Puerto Rico And México

Jennifer Lopez Joins People En Español & Telemundo in NYC For TV Special To Help Victims of Puerto Rico And México

by Daniela Herrera @ PEOPLE.com

People en Español is joining forces with Telemundo for their four-hour television special Todos Unidos, a solidarity program that will be broadcast this Sunday, September 24 at 7 PM EST. Armando Correa, the magazine’s editor-in-chief will be live all four hours from thePeople VIP studios in New York hosting celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Daddy Yankee and Carlos Ponce, among others.

The program aims to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the earthquake in Mexico this week. Mario Kreutzberger, otherwise known as Don Francisco, an icon of television always committed to causes and people most in need will be leading the broadcast.

The two brands are uniting together in this program in order to help the hundreds of affected in México and Puerto Rico. “This is the time for us all to unite and help the Mexican and Puerto Rican people. Each of us, if we contribute a grain of sand, we can make the difference,” says the respected Cuban journalist.

“The images are very sad after the hurricane and the earthquake. But I am excited to see the response of neighbors, celebrities, the world over to save lives, rebuild the country,” says Correa.

Today’s show will also feature simultaneous broadcasts from Miami, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Houston and Los Angeles through the Telemundo network and the cable network Universo.

Todos Unidos will be a special program where the only protagonist will be to embrace solidarity, the word of encouragement and the invitation to be generous with our people,” Don Francisco said in a statement. “We at Telemundo feel committed as a means of communication to serve our community and those who need us most, especially in times as difficult as these.”

It will also help victims of other natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. To start donating there is already a platform available through the Red Cross at: http://www.elpoderenti.com/cruzroja or call 1-800-596-6567.

From the team at People en Español we encourage you to support this cause and join us in this embrace of solidarity with our sister nations. Todos Unidos!
