Using statistics and images, Nadeau showed how some media campaigns have led to an all-time high in eating disorders, depression, and other unhealthy habits fueled by the obsession to achieve an unattainable image of beauty. Hey guys! So recently I received the Dove One Shower challenge in the mail. (You can try it out here) This is where they send you a coupon and a sample of their deep moisture body wash in the mail. From how I understand, this is supposed to be a combination of a body wash and a body conditioner. So basically, if you use this, you are supposed to be able to skip on the moisturizer. I decided to give this a try because Dove is my favorite brand for body care, and I have extremely dry skin. Also, I am always super busy in the week, so if I can skip a step in my routine, that is AWESOME. Now for the shower: I used the body wash with a loofa, so I could also get some dry skin off in addition to using the Dove body wash. I decided to make this into the laziest shower ever, and I used my Macadamia Cleansing Conditioner which is a shampoo and a conditioner in one. Today, after 10+ years of relentless ads, Dove's "Campaign for Real Beauty" was named #1 in the Advertising Age list of top ad campaigns of the 21st century for its mission to, according to the magazine, "change societal notions about beauty." Sorry, but I find that totally lame. I'm also really sick of hearing about this campaign. Of all the ad campaigns in the world, this one is the best? I think the campaign was thought up with positive intentions, and it definitely launched an important cultural conversation about societal norms – but changing norms? I'm not so sold on that one. Dove's campaign does nothing to challenge the popular notion that beauty should be the most important thing in a woman's life. It doesn't aim to stop us from obsessing over looks, it just reframes the conversation about image to a supposedly more positive one.
