Figuring Out Enterprise Software Design

Figuring Out Enterprise Software Design

by Dom Goodrum @ The Percolate BlogThe Percolate Blog

The words “enterprise” and “software” were not something I had put together before joining Percolate.

I’ve written this post to share my learnings on what it means to design software for the enterprise. Let’s start with a definition:

“Enterprise software is computer software used to satisfy the needs of an organization rather than individual users.”

By definition, the very idea of enterprise software appears to be at odds with the idea of user-centered design — where we start problem-solving with the people we’re designing for. In my experience, this conflict has been illustrated by enterprise software solutions that are cluttered and hard to use in their efforts to display large amounts of complex data.

Maximizing Brand Equity

by BJ Bueno @ cultbranding.com

Brand Equity can be defined as the commercial value that derives from consumer perception of the brand name of a particular product or service, in other words, the value premium that a company generates from a product with a recognizable name when compared to a generic equivalent. Think Apple’s new iPhone X price starting at $1000 compared to a generic smartphone. The good news is that you can create brand equity for your products and services by making them memorable, easily recognizable, and superior in quality and reliability. Brand equity has three essential components: Consumer perception Negative or positive effects Resulting value First and foremost, brand equity is built by consumer perception, which includes both knowledge and experience with a brand and its products. The knowledge that a customer segment holds about a brand directly results in either positive or adverse effect. If the brand equity is positive, the organization, its products, and its financials can benefit. If the brand equity is negative, the opposite is true. These effects can turn into either tangible or intangible value. If the effect is positive, the actual value is realized as increases in revenue or profits and intangible value is achieved as marketing […]

The ROI of Brand Command Centers: An Interview with David Beebe

The ROI of Brand Command Centers: An Interview with David Beebe

by Mihika Barua @ The Percolate BlogThe Percolate Blog

Brand marketing has entered an era of rapid-response. Major corporate reputation crises that have beset large brands have made one thing clear: the playbook for how brands communicate with their customers is in need of an update. In this new rapid-response ecosystem, data plays a new role in building customer trust and loyalty. But leveraging data about your brand from multiple sources in real-time, and then using that data to respond to consumers and create engaging content — that’s no easy feat. Many brands are addressing this challenge by building dedicated brand command centers, defined succinctly by Emmy-winning producer and content marketer David Beebe:

“A brand command center is where data and content come together to create always on marketing along the entire customer journey.

How to create your B2B social media strategy – Cambridge #B2BHuddle

I had the pleasure of hosting the event and provided the opening address, including a batch of B2B social media case studies (several of which are featured on this site) to demonstrate how building a credible social media presence and using social media to amplify your content can deliver direct ROI. Claire Trevien, Head of Content Marketing at Passle, our co-hosts for the Huddle, then provided a whirlwind review of what to do after you publish content online – how to share it, re-use it, re-format it, drive reach and stimulate word-of-mouth sharing. Her mention of the newsletter feature within Passle itself, which enables a company to curate it’s content into a newsletter in a few clicks and, usefully, create an internal version for staff (complete with social sharing options) was of great interest. In addition to our round-table discussions, in which participants created, collectively, a B2B social media strategy and content marketing plan for a number of fictitious companies – we also had a guest speaker to inspire and challenge […]

How to Stay on Brand

by BJ Bueno @ cultbranding.com

By Retired Chief Marketing Officer of Kohl’s Department Stores, Julie Gardner Every Journey requires some kind of compass—a sense of where one is headed and an assurance that one is on the right path. This book is, in a word, a compass. As a marketer, keeping the brand that I steward on track is perhaps the most important and difficult challenge by face daily. The rate of speed at which the world is changing require significant insights, strategies, and nimbleness. Today’s environment can be a destroyer of brands if one is not constantly in tune with a customer. Having a brand model based on insights into one’s customers is invaluable. Even better is having a customer-focused model that is dimensionalized so that one can use it as a guide to assess potential scenarios and strategies, allowing for a fluid yet disciplined approach that will grow the brand instead of diluting it. BJ’s Brand Modeling process provides a deep understanding of the passion that one’s best customers have for the brands they love. This understanding guides the strategies and dialogue within the organization with confidence and alignment that expedites decisions and provides the filter through which decisions are made and positive […]

Instagram Marketing Strategy – Find a niche and run with it!

by Lindsay Halls @ Social Media & Digital Marketing Agency | OST

OST Marketing

Without an Instagram Marketing Strategy, your Instagram efforts are likely to reap no return. Now ,this is a fairly bold statement to make – and not always completely accurate – but let me explain myself… Instagram is awash with great visuals and content. If you’re a brand trying to post content purely for likes, based on the types of posts you like to see on Instagram yourself then, chances are, there are others who are posting content which is a lot prettier/more powerful/better produced/smarter than yours. Scroll through a number of popular feeds with thousands of likes and views and it will quickly become apparent why their visuals help drive engagement. For example, imagine this is my sandwich… Honey-glazed ham sandwich with a hint of mayo. #workinglunch #lessismore #lunch #Glasgow #artisan #artisanweek #plainsandwich A post shared by Cook Like A Man (@cook_like_a_man) on Feb 23, 2015 at 4:10am PST It may taste great, it may look pretty decent (the best I have had all week) and I may be able to put a pretty neat filter on it that makes it look like something that would catch my eye? However, a quick search on the popular #sandwiches tag on Instagram […]

A New Year, a new… way to manage your twitter account?

by Chris Tynan @ Social Media & Digital Marketing Agency | OST

OST Marketing

Welcome back everyone, it’s only been a couple of weeks into 2017 and we have already seen some actions that have set the precedent of what will get an audience’s attention on social media. From NYE performances from both Mariah Carey and Robbie Williams causing a stir on both sides of the pond with audiences finding actions by the superstars (though for different reasons) to be both hilarious and horrifying. However, to more serious matters. As a new year kicks off, businesses everywhere are looking at opportunities for how to take their marketing (and in turn, their social media presence) to ‘the next level’ [I loathe this saying]. However, one such company who are currently riding the wave of a new tact of dealing with social media is Wendy’s – the American fast food outlet. The once standard run-of-the-mill, corporate social media account has since become the ‘bad boy’ of Twitter after a clash with a customer who questioned their motto on ‘fresh, never frozen beef’. In a short, but not at all sweet exchange, the Twitter Beef occurred, perfectly shown in a short video (below) by Anderson Cooper. Since then, Wendy’s has come up with a series of tweets […]

What does GDPR mean for social media marketers?

by Daniel Swepson @ Social Media & Digital Marketing Agency | OST

OST Marketing

This is a question lots of marketers have been asking recently – What is GDPR and how does it affect me?  We’ll start from the beginning and keep it as simple as possible… GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation and is an EU regulation for strengthening data protection. It’s due to be implemented in May 2018. I expect you’re thinking ‘well, Brexit is coming so we don’t need to worry about it’. In actual fact, if the UK wants to continue to trade with the EU post-Brexit, our data protection will need to mirror the EU, so chances are it’s still going to apply. The reason for the new regulation is simply that the current Data Protection Act is deemed too old and outdated to cut it in this technologically and digitally advanced world. The new regulation will impact various different areas of our lives, mostly without us even realising, however the four main changes we’ll see are: Opting-in for marketing materials must be transparent and remain unchanged. Consenting to marketing communications has to be recorded, verified and unambiguous. It is hoped that this new approach will strengthen the one-to-one relationship a consumer has with brands they love. There may […]

Spreading stories: Jon Torrens speaks at OST University

by Chris Tynan @ Social Media & Digital Marketing Agency | OST

OST Marketing

Every other Wednesday OST hosts an internal ‘University’ session for staff to listen, discuss and learn something new. In June the topic was public speaking – so we welcomed an external speaker, Jon Torrens, to inspire and educate us. OST’er Chris Tynan explains what happened… Confidence in public speaking is not something that comes to many of us naturally, yet speaking in public is something that we all have to do at various stages in our lives. Whether that be in a pitch, a job interview, or even professing your love to your better half… public speaking is an integral skill to be able to convince and convert your audience. Jon Torrens, a qualified public speaker and coach, is a former stand-up comedian who is well-known in the public speaking circuit. Unfortunately for Jon, he was our guinea pig for a warm afternoon in June after we coaxed him into our office near Cambridge to give the team a masterclass in enticing your audience through powerful public speaking. The Adventure of Supreme Confidence | Jon Torrens | TEDxAngliaRuskinUniversity Jon initially covered off nuggets of wisdom including rehearse (obviously!), be conversational (makes sense), and think like a spy (what?!). Using the […]

by Lisa Kalscheur @ Insights

In their new book, “Killing Marketing,” authors Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose advocate doing exactly that: Destroying marketing as we know it and rebuilding it as a more effective and sustainable model. As a marketer who’s been in the field for 15 years, I was initially skeptical. I felt that I’d violently disagree with whatever […]

Ten Strategies for Using Emotional Intelligence to Become a Transformative Leader

by BJ Bueno @ cultbranding.com

When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity. —Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People _______________________ When we think of leaders, we usually picture some larger-than-life person known for their ability to create transformation and inspire others to take up their cause.1 These transformative leaders can be great role models, but they can also create a feeling that great leadership is beyond the grasp of most people.2 You may not create a movement like Mahatma Gandhi, but you can achieve transformative leadership. Transformative leadership starts with a big vision of what you want yourself and your company to become. Although motivated by passion, creating a vision is the domain of cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are important, but just possessing great cognitive skill does not guarantee the successful implementation and acceptance of your vision. These cognitive skills are only one element of what psychologist Robert J. Sternberg termed “successful intelligence.” Another equally important element is what he called “practical intelligence.” In Sternberg’s words: “Practical intelligence involves applying the components of intelligence to experience so as […]

What do the new influencer marketing guidelines mean for brands?

by Katherine Chittenden @ Social Media & Digital Marketing Agency | OST

OST Marketing

Brands: listen up! New influencer marketing guidelines have been announced. These are designed to encourage brands to be up front with their social media followers and to make sure your audience is aware of the ‘paid’ relationship between the influencer and the brand. Here’s what you need to know… The new guidelines from the Committee of Advertising Practice ask that brands require influencers to notify their followers that their post is an advertisement in the title of their post or content of a Tweet. For image-based posts (such as on Instagram) the word ‘ad’ should be added to the image to ensure it’s obvious that the post was sponsored. How many times have you seen an influencer post that looked a normal selfie with their favourite new shampoo or snack? Perhaps the majority of celebrities and influencers still don’t make their paid promotions very obvious. You may have already started to see #ad or #spon on posts, but certain techniques can be used to hide this from all but the most savvy followers, which kind of defeats the object. As celebrity and influencer marketing is becoming more popular (see our post on the Rise of the social media influencer for […]

OST Marketing

OST has been listed among the top 10 fastest growing B2B digital marketing agencies in the UK. Based on bench-marking research by B2B Marketing, we are ranked 7th among the fastest growing agencies in the country. B2B content marketing has always been one of our strengths. Following early successes with Cambridge technology brands, such as CSR and Cambridge Consultants, we have built a team of highly experienced B2B professionals who are specialists in delivering niche B2B campaigns that deliver leads. We also use some of the smartest technology available, just to give us the edge! B2B Marketing have also produced a full report with listings showing the top 100 B2B digital marketing agencies. OST is ranked #66 in these listings which are heavily weighted towards the amount of turnover attributable to B2B. Given that much of our work relates to FMCG brands, we are thrilled to be ranked so high for our B2B content marketing, which includes global projects for many well-known technology, pharmaceutical and finance brands. Looking for insight?  We’ll be running a free B2B digital marketing workshop in Cambridge in March, featuring insights from our clients and partners. It’s invitation only, but contact us if you’re keen to […]
