Is Too Much Technology Making Us Sick?

by Margaret Manning @ Fashion, Hair, Makeup for Older Women, Senior Dating, Travel

For the most part, I'm a huge fan of technology. It helps us to communicate, keeps us healthier longer and gives us access to limitless sources of information. At the same time, there is no denying that technology has its downsizes. For example, it can encourage us to abandon genuine relationships in favor of fickle online friendships. It can also keep us locked up indoors when we should be exploring the world. So, today, I’d love to discuss how we can find the right balance between embracing technology and staying connected to the real world. Do you think that technology is mostly good or bad for our health? In what ways has technology improved your life? In what ways has it made it worse?

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

ABSA L’Atelier continues to Give Art Life

by Hello Joburg @ Hello JHB

To give something life is to make it breathe, make it move so that it creates impact on existence itself. It’s a definitive experience that takes something from being static, to giving it greater purpose. That’s exactly what ABSA L’Atelier is all about, giving life to art, and creating a much needed platform for up and coming African artists to establish themselves in the Art industry. Not so long ago in the wonders of the ABSA Art Gallery, during a formidable gala experience, the winners of the ABSA L’Atelier competition were announced. ABSA L’Atelier has given art life with yet another inspirational conclusion to the L’Atelier competition. The 32nd edition of the prestigious competition featured entries from 10 different countries, and was open to young and emerging artists under the age of 35. Kenya’s Maral Bolouri and South Africa’s Banele Khoza took the top awards this year, showcasing art that that was not only thought-provoking, but stood for social change. Mothers and Others by Bolouri was the stand-out winner; a multi-sensory, interactive installation that investigates representations of women in African oral traditions. It explores the power of proverbs by juxtaposing negative and positive depictions of women in cultural truisms. Banele Khoza got his hands on the Gerard Sekoto Award, which is awarded to an outstanding SouthAfrican Artist, who has shown improvement in their art of the years. He won the award for his piece Note Making, which comprises a series of digital drawings printed with an inkjet printer. Through the pieces, Khoza questions representations of what it is to be a male in South Africa and within the broader social context. The night comprised of further merit prizes being given to deserving members of the top ten and a grand showcasing of their pieces. All was in the appreciation of...

COACHELLA CLICHES – THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

by Lauren Lawson @ Beauty By The Ages

A little musical festival called Coachella kicked off last weekend, as anyone with a social media account knows. The desert town of Indio, CA quickly turned home to the largest population of girls donning crop tops and ankle boots at any given point in time. There were plenty of new takes on festival style this year and of course the perennial looks staking their claim as wardrobe staples (cut off jean shorts and floppy hats aren’t going anywhere it looks like). While some of these looks still reign supreme, it’s time for others to take a back seat and gracefully make way for the next wave of trends. With the help of social media it’s pretty apparent what was trending this year, so let’s break a few of them down: Braids – When news broke that Vanessa Hudgens wouldn’t be making any grand reappearances at Coachella it was pretty upsetting; if anyone knew how to rock festival hair it was her. Thankfully, Kate Bosworth really stepped it up and was a perfect replacement for hair envy. POPSUGAR shares this Vanessa/Kate sentiment with me and gives credit where credit is due, and Kate’s epic braid deserves a lot. I have yet […]

Dove’s Real Beauty Pledge showcases “real’ women. Viva!

Dove’s Real Beauty Pledge showcases “real’ women. Viva!

Hello JHB

Not many of us are models, yet we live a life so pressurized to look like one, it’s crazy, really. This world where body shaming and insecurity have become the norm for women, Dove is taking a stand to reaffirm its pledge to real beauty in real women. With that in mind Dove announces the Dove Real Beauty Pledge. The aim is to help women to realize their personal beauty potential and create a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety. In a recent survey, Dove found that over half of South African women believe the media and advertising set an unrealistic standard of beauty. And, nearly 3 in 4 women believe social media creates more pressure for them to look a certain way. The Dove Real Beauty Pledge is working to change that. It states: * We always feature real women, never models: Zero models in our campaigns * Our campaigns reflect the population’s diversity * We portray women as they are in real life: Zero digital distortion of women * Image approved by the women we feature * We help girls build body confidence and self-esteem For over 10 years the Dove Self-Esteem Project has educated over 20 million young people in body confidence and self-esteem and has become the biggest provider of self-esteem education of its kind. We will now educate 20 million more young people around the world on body confidence and self-esteem by 2020 The Real Beauty Pledge will be launched alongside a new campaign with world-renowned photographer Mario Testino.  All the images have been inspired by, and shot, according to the Dove Real Beauty Pledge, and feature 32 real women and girls, aged 11 – 71, from all over the world – including South Africa.  The portraits make up part of the Dove Real Beauty Showcase which will... 3 STEPS TO PERFECT, DEFINED BROWS

by Rachel Brown @ Beauty By The Ages

Unless you’ve been stuck in the beauty aisles for a year or two, you’re probably aware that we’re living in the golden age of arches. The Kardashian sisters and Cara Delevingne have turned their Instagram feeds into virtual streaming advertisements for bold brows, and eyebrow wizards such as Anastasia Soare, Damone Roberts and Kristie Streicher are at the tops of their games. Our insatiable appetite for brow products and expertise is letting others squeeze into the brow scene, too, even those who upend the established eyebrow orthodoxy. Consider Marco Ochoa, a Beverly Hills-based brow artist with an impressive cadre of celebrity fans (Camila Alves McConaughey, Malin Akerman and Eva Longoria, just to name a few), a natural bent, and a unique point of view on brow pencils and powders. Tending to brows since he was a teenager, Ochoa hasn’t been particularly enthusiastic about the pencils and powders wielded as brow tools. Pencils, he lamented in a recent interview with BBTA, can yank eyebrow hairs. “Powders look ashier, and they don’t stay on long,” he added. Ochoa resorted to brown eye shadow to fill in brows. “I was never happy. I just used it because I had to use it,” he […]

10 Years After Dove's 'Real Beauty' Campaign, More Brands Fight for Real Women

10 Years After Dove's 'Real Beauty' Campaign, More Brands Fight for Real Women

TakePart

It's been 10 years since Dove launched its “Campaign for Real Beauty”—a stark series of ads that were radical and simple in equal measure—featuring lovely, normal-sized women who didn’t need Photoshop to look radiant. The ads, which ran in 2004 and 2005, lacked any screed about the pressures that come with being a woman in a visual culture that’s awash in creatively lit, digitally manipulated images of dangerously thin models. The folks behind the campaign simply let us feel our own shock at seeing women with normal curves and natural faces being celebrated for their beauty in a national advertisement. Dove didn't stop there. The soap maker added rocket fuel to the conversation in 2006, when its time-lapse "Evolution" video went viral. The movement to expose marketers' use of trickery to convince us that we're failing if we don't have flawless skin and breathtaking bodies was here to stay. Significant progress has been made since Dove's campaign: The American public, the blogosphere, and the Twitterverse now routinely call out magazine publishers and marketers for digitally altering images of girls and women to shrink their bodies, smooth their faces, and otherwise morph them to fit an unrealistic, narrow ideal of beauty. The pace is quickening. In just the past few months, there's been even more progress and a few moments that drove the dialogue forward. 1. The more bare skin a campaign flaunts, the more Photoshop it typically gets. But American Eagle says its new campaign for the Aerie line of lingerie will not use any altered images of models. Instead, “real” girls and women can upload unretouched photos of themselves to a photo gallery. Sure, it’s pretty screwed up that selling underwear using real photos of gorgeous, skinny young girls (instead of digitally improved gorgeous, skinny young girls) is seen as groundbreaking. But moving away from the idealized versions of women who don't exist is a footstep Dove took, and the clothier is now following its lead. “It’s great that we’re beginning to break that down,” said Heather Arnet, executive director of the Women & Girls Foundation, of the fakeries that line the glossies. 2. Forever Yours Lingerie didn't stop working with model Elly Mayday when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year. It featured beautiful shots of her with surgical scars unhidden and no wig or digital fakery to hide the baldness that resulted from her cancer treatment. Rather than looking like something’s missing, Mayday’s baldness comes across as strong and sexy. It’s empowering for the rest of us to see a woman outside the beauty mold we’ve been sold for so long—and to find ourselves aspiring to emulate her sexy confidence and appeal. (Forever Yours also gets points for raising money toward Mayday’s medical expenses.) 3. A new time-lapse video released by Hungarian pop star Boggie shows her singing a pop song called “Nouveau Parfum” while being Photoshopped, a fresh take on Dove's "Evolution" that's amplified by the resigned expression on her face. As the song unfolds, pieces of her disappear and are overwritten: Boggie’s eyes, like everyone else’s, aren’t exactly symmetrical. So one is deleted, then replaced by an exact copy of the other. Not a single square inch of her face or hair is left untouched. 4. Earlier last month during the Golden Globes, actor Diane Keaton took the stage to honor Woody Allen, her tousled hair and menswear-chic outfit reminding us of the trend she set when Annie Hall hit theaters in 1977. It was also clear on high-definition screens across America that at 68, she's got (oh, the horror!) lots of lines on her gorgeous face. When her speech ended, the network cut to a commercial break featuring Keaton selling L'Oréal cosmetics without a line on her digitally enhanced face, seemingly sporting the skin of a 25-year-old. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook quickly lit up with scorn. That social media response is valuable, Arnet says, because younger women and girls are active on Instagram and Twitter and are participating in those conversations. 5. Former Cosmopolitan editor Leah Hardy drew attention for admitting that during her tenure the magazine routinely Photoshopped out the protruding bones of super skinny models to keep readers from seeing how emaciated the models really were. Since that admission surfaced, before-and-after comparisons of bone-thin models and their healthier-looking altered images have been popping up around the Web. Apparently the world’s top fashion magazines, despite the huge budgets at their disposal, cannot find a single woman on the planet who isn’t either too thin or too fat for their liking. It’s further reinforcement of the conclusion we’d love to share with every tween girl who’s just beginning to notice her appearance: The elusive “perfection” that every cosmetic company and clothing retailer is trying to sell you does not exist. 6. Mindy Kaling might not have minded, but many other people did: When Elle magazine published covers for its February 2014 issue featuring Kaling, readers and pundits immediately questioned why Kaling's cover was a black-and-white close-up rather than the full-color, full-body shots of the other (skinnier and more "conventionally" beautiful) actors. That's the key: We've begun to make a habit of questioning how women are depicted and what tools are being used to change or edit their appearance for public consumption. Yes, the visual landscape is still awash with altered images, surgically altered models, and the pressure to be thinner, younger, and closer to the narrow beauty ideal that so much marketing pushes on us. Marketers aren’t going to stop selling us

Getting More from Fashion After 60

Today's conversation is likely to be controversial, so, I hope that you will bear with me! Not so long ago, I had the opportunity to travel down to Milan, Italy to meet with fashion expert, Melanie Payge. Our conversation was colorful, creative and more than a little controversial! Today, I want to share 6 guidelines that Melanie gave to our community for getting more from fashion after 60. You may not agree with all of them – I certainly didn’t – but they will certainly get you thinking! More than anything, they will give us something fun to chat about! Do you find yourself dressing differently these days, compared to your 40s, for example? Do you think that there are any “guidelines” that women our age can follow to get the most from our fashion choices? Or, do you think that fashion after 60 is all about comfort?

Miranda began her acting career on SABC1’s Tshisa and from there on she has became a regular face that we see on our television, starring in programmes such eTV Rhythm City, SABC1’s Walala Wasala, 7de Laan and Zabalaza. We caught up with Miranda recently, to find out a bit more about her: What drives and motivates you on a daily basis? Knowing that nothing is against me- it is your perception of the world at that time… Therefore everything is for you depending how you would like to see it. Positivity is key! ALWAYS! Where would we find you on your day off? At home in my garden with the kids, or in front of the TV catching up on my fave programmes, or in the studio working… Books or movies? Pregnant Kylie Jenner Flashes a Bit of Her Baby Bump and Poses in a Bathrobe with Her Girlfriends

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

Kylie Jenner is teasing the first signs of a baby bump.

The 20-year-old reality star, who is expecting her first child with beau Travis Scott, shared a glimpse of her stomach in an Instagram photo wishing her BFF Jordyn Woods a happy birthday. In the photo — which was taken on Friday but uploaded on Sunday — Jenner rests her hand on her waist, slightly lifting her baggy black sweatshirt to expose a glimpse of her stomach.

“Yesterday was cute,” Jenner captioned the image with Woods and a giraffe. “Hope you had the happiest of birthdays Jordy. Love you forever ever and beyond..”

The makeup mogul posted another photo with several girlfriends on Sunday, where they’re all posing in white bath robes.

“Mornings,” she simply captioned the mirror selfie with a happy face.

One day after sources confirmed to PEOPLE that she is pregnant, Jenner headed to Las Vegas to watch him perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who is expecting a baby girl in February, covered up her bump with an oversized black t-shirt and brown plastic pants.

From a VIP platform, Jenner watched Scott, 25, perform with DJ Khaled, Chance The Rapper, Demi Lovato and French Montana at the T-Mobile Arena.

Scott and Jenner are both exciting about becoming new parents.

“It is an unexpected but completely amazing turn of events that she could not be more excited or thrilled about,” a source previously said.

“Everyone is overjoyed for her,” the source added. “This is the happiest she’s ever been.”

Another insider said Scott began telling friends about the pregnancy in July. “He was so excited he couldn’t keep it in,” says the insider. “He’s been so affectionate and protective of Kylie since they found out. He can’t wait to be a dad.”

10 Exercise Tips for Busy Women

by GC @ Calm.Healthy.Sexy. Healthy ideas for your life and marriage.

I’m passionate (maybe even a bit fanatic!) about encouraging women to exercise and be physically active as part of their daily lives. PRO STYLIST JEN ATKIN’S TRICK TO BOOSTING VOLUME

by Rachel Brown @ Beauty By The Ages

Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin’s Snapchat is an all-encompassing guide to getting killer Kardashian hair in seconds-long snippets. Even if my paltry tresses won’t ever slay like Kim’s, Khloe’s or Kourtney’s, I follow it religiously for product tips and tricks to enhance my seriously feeble mane efforts. (It doesn’t hurt that Khloe Kardashian has mastered Snapchat lenses to hilarious effect.) From her snaps, I’ve learned products from Kardashian Beauty, Kevin Murphy, Ibiza, GHD, Kérastase and her own line Ouai are staples in Atkin’s tool kit. Those may not be astonishing, but I was amazed when Color Wow Root Cover Up kept popping up in Atkin’s product mix and not to hide unseemly roots – and I wasn’t the only beauty editor who noticed. Allure’s Maddie Aberman got the scoop from Atkin on using Color Wow to make hair appear fuller. “I brush it right along the part and around the face and the nape of the neck if I do a bun or a ponytail to fill in any exposed scalp,” Atkin told Aberman. I decided to dive deeper into unusual applications of Color Wow by chatting with Giles Robinson, the brand’s global director of training and education. He explained current […]

YOU AREN’T DOING ENOUGH TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN UNLESS YOU ARE DOING ALL OF THESE THINGS

by Rachel Brown @ Beauty By The Ages

A great beach trip isn’t compromised by sand in our swimsuits, seaweed in our hair or tar on our feet, but being burnt to a crisp can really make it a bummer. To help us avoid being scorched by the sun during a seaside excursion in these remaining summer days, we turned to Michele Racioppi, product educator and master esthetician for the skin care brand Cosmedicine, and former senior instructor at New York’s Atelier Esthetique Institute of Esthetics, for advice on how to protect ourselves from overexposure to UVs. Here are a few of her best tips: Use a multi-dimensional approach by layering your protection. “We all know sunscreen is imperative. But in addition to sunscreen, more can be done to protect your skin from the sun’s rays by using a multi-dimensional approach and ‘layering up’ coverage when heading to the beach. My first layer of protection is a very water resistant broad spectrum SPF, which defends against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses, a large hat and a cover-up provide another layer. At the beach, an umbrella provides even more protection. The final layer is the aftercare I give my skin when I get home.” Apply sun protection properly. […]

Prince Harry Hangs Out with Invictus Athletes — and Gives a Service Dog a Head Rub

Prince Harry Hangs Out with Invictus Athletes — and Gives a Service Dog a Head Rub

by Simon Perry @ PEOPLE.com

When Prince Harry went on a behind-the-scenes tour of the athletics stadium at his Paralympic-style Invictus Games, it was more than just the competitors who caught his eye.

“He was mainly talking to Knoxville, my puppy,” says Stefan Leroy, whose service dog received a princely pat on Sunday.

Leroy adds, “He got to play with him for a little bit. He was saying he was a good boy and beautiful looking.”

The 26-year-old former army sergeant — who lost both of his legs in Afghanistan in 2012 —  says Harry, 33, “was encouraging us all.”

For Christy Wise, 30, co-captain of the US Team, it was a chance to exchange some light-hearted banter with the prince as he toured the facility.

“I was carrying my leg and he was ‘Are you carrying you own leg or someone else’s?’ ” she says. “I was like, ‘My own leg this time.’ ”

Wise continues, “He just hangs out with us. He’s all about this. He knows the athletes and is not here to take the picture and leave.”

The serving pilot of Reno, Nevada, severed her right leg when she was hit by a motorboat while paddle-boarding in the sea near Shalimar, Florida, in April 2015. When she took a dive down to swim away from the boat, the propeller cut into her.

She received a bronze medal from Harry following the 100m race. He embraced all the medal-winners in the trackside ceremony.

“I just gave him a hug and tried to keep it short,” Wise adds.

RELATED VIDEO: Prince Harry Kicks Off Invictus Games

In the 200-meter race later, she came in third, after she stumbled when she kicked her ankle with the prosthetic. And then, in a moment that summed up what the Invictus Games are all about, the other racers waited for her and then hugged her at the finish line.

She says, “Sarah Rudder and I train together and are good friends. It’s all about being out here.”

She is looking forward to rowing on Tuesday. “I usually have an disadvantage because I’m an above-the-knee amputee and the other girls are below-the-knee. But in rowing it kind of evens the playing field a little.”

Leroy and Wise are among around 550 competitors from 17 nations taking part in competition until September 30 in Toronto, Canada.

10+ Times Everyday Objects Were Actually Pop Culture Icons In Disguise

by Viktorija G. @ Bored Panda

For those who haven't yet heard, pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus, usually an image or a sound, by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists. To put it simply, it's a bug in the human mind that causes it to see things that aren't really there. For example, you look at a regular tap but see Ice Age's acorn-obsessed Scrat or you glance at a juicy cinnamon roll but it becomes an anguished E.T.

20 Ways to Get More from Life in “Retirement”

by Margaret Manning @ Fashion, Hair, Makeup for Older Women, Senior Dating, Travel

Retirement ain’t what it used to be! This is one of the things that I have learned as I have talked with all of the wonderful women in our community. Unlike our own grandmothers, we see life after 60 as a time for exploring, growing, learning and giving back. We are raising our voices rather than keeping quiet. We are getting out into the world rather than sitting in front of the TV. We are embracing technology rather than getting stuck in our ways. So, in celebration of the dynamic and wonderful women in our community, today, I want to offer 20 ways to get more from life in "retirement." Even if you haven’t retired – or never plan to – I think that you will find these idea useful!

Governor General of Canada Thinks It Would Be ‘Marvelous’ If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Got Married

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

Add another person to the list of those helping Meghan Markle and Prince Harry someday marry!

David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, told ITV that the romance is strengthening ties between the U.K. and Canada, where the American actress films her show Suits and has adopted as a second home.

“I think it would be quite marvellous and I hope it would be quite marvellous for him and obviously it will help to bring us together,” Johnston said. “But, you know, that reflects so many of the people-to-people ties that are so strong. I think about 20% of our citizens would claim British heritage so those ties are very strong.”

Johnston said that he “didn’t know” that Markle, 36, was sitting near him at the opening ceremonies for the Invictus Games in Toronto.

“ was alone but you say, I gather, there was a young lady in the audience who was watching him with great interest,” he said.

RELATED VIDEO: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s History (So Far)

Markle was all smiles as she cheered on the athletes in the Paralympic-style Invictus Games for wounded service members from around the world. Meanwhile, Harry sat a few rows away next to First Lady Melania Trump whom he met with earlier in the day.

Toronto has become a special place for the couple. Harry made a secret detour from the Caribbean to spend time with Markle in her adopted hometown in December. The royal couple also spent Easter weekend together in Toronto. Harry also called Toronto a “home away from home” when he met with Johnston.

“Despite the distance, the media attention and everything else, there’s a real ease to their relationship,” a source previously told PEOPLE. “It just works. They are deeply happy.”

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Eating Girl Scout Cookies at the Oscars Is the Internet’s Best New Meme

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

RELATED: The Best Girl Scout Cookie Recipes

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Also Thin Mint brownie sundaes.

Also Samoas-flavored birthday cake.

Can you tell we’re excited about it?

I’M A GROWN WOMAN! WHY DO I STILL HAVE ACNE?

by Tabitha Gold @ Beauty By The Ages

Paid Advertisement When pimples and blackheads made high school miserable, how many times did you hear: “Stop worrying … you’ll grow out of it” “Stop worrying … only teenagers get pimples and blackheads” “Stop worrying … wait a few years and your skin will be beautiful again. You’ll see.” So here you are, a few years (or more) later and you’re still worrying about acne! Weren’t your pimples  supposed stay behind in high school to torment the next generation of teenagers? Unfortunately, the short answer is ‘no’. Adult acne — especially in women — is far more common than most of us think. In fact… Studies show most adult women struggle with acne! One study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that over one half of women in their twenties report persistent acne problems. Even 1 in 3 women in their thirties are still bothered by acne. Shocked? We weren’t. After all, adult acne results from the same skin conditions that cause teen acne: p. acnes bacteria, clogged pores, excess oil, dead skin cells … you know the story. HOW TO SELF-TAN LIKE A (VERY PALE) BEAUTY EDITOR

by Elizabeth Snower @ Beauty By The Ages

It’s been almost a decade since I swore off actual tanning—you know, in the sun or in a tanning bed—so self-tanning is a familiar ritual for me. With a fresh faux tan, I feel younger, thinner, more glowy … ready to take on the world! With that in mind, I wholeheartedly recommend the experience. What I definitely don’t recommend is cutting any corners. To succeed in the art of self-tanning, one must play by the rules! Here, I’ve put together a list of the most important ones I’ve learned through experience. FINDING YOUR COLOR IS KEY. Whether you employ a DIY approach or get sprayed by a professional, you’ll hate your tan if the shade is bogus. To make sure you get it right, perfect the process well in advance of any big events on your calendar—you don’t want to accidentally show up orange, and, believe me, a botched self-tan won’t exactly come right off with a washcloth. If it’s a new product you’re using, patch test it to make sure it works with your skin tone. (I learned the hard way that self-tanners are not universally flattering, when I tried getting a spray tan at a salon within walking […]

Backing Business Women: Veuve Clicquot Elle Boss Awards

by Hello Joburg @ Hello JHB

There is still so much that needs to be done in the name of empowering women in business. The day where women outwardly conquer the world is still many steps away, the pressure of patriarchy pinches at our path. With this in mind, the Veuve Clicquot Elle Boss Awards are set to encourage business women and female entrepreneurs for a third year. Veuve Clicquot, Old Mutual and Elle are coming together to build up the powerhouse that is successful women. South Africa is bustling with the potential of Girl Bosses, and this is something the three brands have recognised. For the first time since the competition’s inception, ultimate Girl Boss, Khanyi Dhlomo along with Ndalo Media, are now officially behind the campaign. With the powerful black female boss in the mix, the Awards have been taken to another level. “These awards align with the Ndalo Media ethos of positively impacting lives by celebrating the women who are building leadership legacies that cultivate the culture of inspired positive impact,” explains Dhlomo. So who is the Veuve Clicquot Elle Boss? She is the confident and committed face of women in business, taking pride in her brand and being a natural leader in her essence. Veuve Cliquot ensured that the core of the Awards is elegant and uplifting. “This award champions the success of South African business women who share the same inspirational qualities as Madame Clicquot: an enterprising spirit, creativity, courage, determination and, of course, success,” says Patrick Madendjian, Moët Hennessy Market Manager for South Africa. If you know a woman fitting this stature, whether as an entrepreneur or in a managerial position in business, then make sure you enter her in to this year’s competition, where entries close 29 September 2017.
