BIG Life Changes

BIG Life Changes

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Many of you don't know this, but I have been in hiding. I have tried to keep my personal life quiet and stay hidden while going through a divorce and finding out who the real Kim is and what she really wants in life. For too many years, I have been a people pleaser, doing what everyone else wants me to do from poses on the set, how to dress and wear my hair/make up, to putting my family first and me last.

My first big life change after separation from my husband of 21 years occurred when I left my 5 bedroom home on 5 acres across the street from the ocean in Florida. The house was filled with 15 years of memories raising 3 beautiful sons. I drove away from it all with just my dog and a car full of my possessions, staying with friends and family for 3 months. I would use this time to ask and beg God to know if I was doing the right thing. All I knew was that I needed to get far away and find healing in the mountains. I finally arrived in Boulder, Colorado, December 2013.

I didn’t know a soul out in Boulder and I spent some pretty snowy nights huddled up in my little place; lonely but free. It has been 3 years now and I have found wonderful friends in Boulder, as well as my older friends around the country to help me find me. I found in them love and support to help me heal my heart. They accepted me for who I am and gently forced me to make decisions, any decision instead of saying, “I don’t care. Whatever you want to do is fine with me.”

I have always known that some day I would move back to New York City. There has been an unrelenting voice screaming inside of me to help other women; to encourage them by telling my story and struggles. I kept my inner ears opened for that right time to leave my healthy Boulder nest and venture back out into the world to help transform it and empower others. I feel that NOW is the time! I am healthy and strong and have more of a passion and desire than ever to express myself.

So, just the other day in one instant, I heard that inner voice say, “NOW”. I am ready. No one is going to stop me or mess with my mind and emotions. I am through people pleasing. I know what I want and even though I am stepping out in faith, with no place to reside in the city, I have put a date on my move of September 1st. I made a big life decision this week and I am ready to show my inner strength and be heard!

Control

Control

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Control…

Recently, I have become aware of a control issue; people needing to control others. How do people control others, you ask? There are many ways I am becoming aware of. People offer their opinions and also try to force others to do things their way. They choose what they think is best for others without asking them, like where to eat or what movie to watch. I am not sure if I am seeing more “controlling” people because I need to learn to set healthy boundaries or just that more and more people feel the need to control others.

I left home at 18, from being under the control of my parents to an apartment alone in New York City where I no longer had to answer to anyone. It was a big shock and for awhile, I didn't know what to do with myself. I had free time and got to make all of my own choices without parent supervision. I jumped into a business where I was paid to have other people “dress me up” so it took awhile for me to learn what I really liked to wear. (I dressed as a punk for a bit, then wore a string of pearls with sweatshirts and a pony tail.) People still told me what to wear when I worked, but after work, I eventually found what I liked and felt comfortable in.

I don't feel that I am a controlling person. Most of the time I don't care where I eat, what movie to see or what the plans are for the weekend. I don't force my ways and opinions on my 3 sons either. I am much more of a hands off and let people make their own decisions type person. I have never been bossy or overbearing and I don't like that quality in others.

I find lately that many people want to give me advice and tell me their opinions without me even asking. I had to examine that and wonder why others felt the need to give me advice. Do I come across as weak or stupid? I don't think so. I have come to realize that I am taking offense when others push their opinions on me which isn't good either. I rise up like a little kid and push back, firmly letting them know that I don't need their advice. A happy medium would be for me to learn healthy boundaries and stop people before they offer their opinions with a gentle warning or kind word stating that I can figure it out on my own, thank you very much.

So, as you read this article, do you find that you are someone who has to give their opinions and have their way all the time or do you sit back and let others have their way? Which way is the right way? Should everyone be able to do what they want without advice from others? When is it okay to step in and voice your opinion? Are there certain circumstances when it is right and good to try to direct someone away from doing the wrong thing?

I have found that it is best to listen and not voice your opinion.

What Is The Bible Definition of Beauty And What Does True Beauty Look Like?

Probably the most famous quote about beauty comes from Margaret Wolfe Hungerford in her book Molly Bawn, in 1878 (1). There she wrote “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Given this quote and many others, it is clear that many people believe that beauty is defined by the observer. However, the Bible is …

Opportunity

Opportunity

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Moving back to New York City from a comfortable, peaceful life filled with friends but with no established job, has taught me one major thing...and many other things that aren't so minor either!

That I am either very dumb to just step out in faith, or I am very tuned into what God has next for me - making me strong and seemingly invincible! I have patiently waited on God....waited to get me the inner strength to do this stepping out of the nest. I have had years of waiting, while not being envious of others who were thriving when I was stalled out in Colorado.

I am very tuned in to opportunity. I have positioned myself, knowing that I am supposed to be here in the city. I also have learned not to have regrets. I am not looking back wondering, "Dear God, what have I done?" I downsized, I gave away, I let go and I moved forward. Am I stupid or am I ready for new things to fill me up?

I sit here in New York alone - I don't want to be alone but I need to be ready. I am fully tuned in to each and every opportunity that comes along even if it is something I have never done before. When I look back at all of the different skills I have accomplished because I said yes and was willing to step out in faith and say, "I have never done this before, but I am willing to learn!" I know that I was always taken care of.

I started to model at 18. That was new to me and I was very green in fashion and beauty as I grew up a tomboy and athlete. Then I was asked to go on Good Morning America to be the fashion correspondent and when I said yes, they put me on LIVE the next morning.

When asked to speak, I had to learn a new skill set.

Now I am writing and you can ask my English teachers; it wasn't my strong suit.

So what makes me tick? What makes me move forward? It is an overwhelming passion deep with in me to keep going and not quit until I have been positioned to encourage women of all ages to be strong in whatever area they are battling. What makes me go on is the feedback I get after a speech, where someone comes up and says that they were going to kill themselves until I shared my story. I am willing to be vulnerable because I know I am taken care of and that I am strong in Him when I do things in His Will and in His timing.

I hope that this gives you the strength to wait for the right opportunity and do something new.

Safer Swaps: a guide to replace your high-performing favorite cosmetics with non-toxic cleaner-ingredient versions

by Stacy @ Real Beauty – Real Everything

There’s no way to say this without sounding old: back in the day I used to keep up with all the popular cosmetics. My disposable income was for me (not 3 insatiably hungry boys) and I loved belonging to all the groups for make-up tutorials and even belonged to a “swapping” club to make things more affordable. Admittedly, my love of playing with make-up hasn’t completely disappeared. I still love to try out new things and play with my appearance. However, my priorities have changed: I want things to be worth the money I spend, and I don’t want them to be filled with toxic chemicals. Don’t miss the end of the post where I tell you how you can save money and better your health by switching, too! I’ve shared before about how much I’ve been loving finding a safer skincare & cleaner cosmetics company, and after nearly a year of playing with their products I thought it’d be fun to share what I recommend as “swaps” to what the good ol’ interwebs led me to believe are the latest and greatest popular products. You know, ’cause I’m really an 80 yo woman quite clueless about all the “cool” […]

Prince Harry Hangs Out with Invictus Athletes — and Gives a Service Dog a Head Rub

Prince Harry Hangs Out with Invictus Athletes — and Gives a Service Dog a Head Rub

by Simon Perry @ PEOPLE.com

When Prince Harry went on a behind-the-scenes tour of the athletics stadium at his Paralympic-style Invictus Games, it was more than just the competitors who caught his eye.

“He was mainly talking to Knoxville, my puppy,” says Stefan Leroy, whose service dog received a princely pat on Sunday.

Leroy adds, “He got to play with him for a little bit. He was saying he was a good boy and beautiful looking.”

The 26-year-old former army sergeant — who lost both of his legs in Afghanistan in 2012 —  says Harry, 33, “was encouraging us all.”

For Christy Wise, 30, co-captain of the US Team, it was a chance to exchange some light-hearted banter with the prince as he toured the facility.

“I was carrying my leg and he was ‘Are you carrying you own leg or someone else’s?’ ” she says. “I was like, ‘My own leg this time.’ ”

Wise continues, “He just hangs out with us. He’s all about this. He knows the athletes and is not here to take the picture and leave.”

The serving pilot of Reno, Nevada, severed her right leg when she was hit by a motorboat while paddle-boarding in the sea near Shalimar, Florida, in April 2015. When she took a dive down to swim away from the boat, the propeller cut into her.

She received a bronze medal from Harry following the 100m race. He embraced all the medal-winners in the trackside ceremony.

“I just gave him a hug and tried to keep it short,” Wise adds.

RELATED VIDEO: Prince Harry Kicks Off Invictus Games

In the 200-meter race later, she came in third, after she stumbled when she kicked her ankle with the prosthetic. And then, in a moment that summed up what the Invictus Games are all about, the other racers waited for her and then hugged her at the finish line.

She says, “Sarah Rudder and I train together and are good friends. It’s all about being out here.”

She is looking forward to rowing on Tuesday. “I usually have an disadvantage because I’m an above-the-knee amputee and the other girls are below-the-knee. But in rowing it kind of evens the playing field a little.”

Leroy and Wise are among around 550 competitors from 17 nations taking part in competition until September 30 in Toronto, Canada.

Today is day 5 of our Launch Celebration, which mean a fifth day of giveaways! Today is a particularly special one for me (Stacy) because it’s something I’ve recently become incredibly passionate about. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and yet another reason for me to shout from the rooftops that beauty is NOT a reason to expose yourself to toxins or chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and more. The European Union has banned 1400 of the chemicals scientifically linked to these issues, but the US remains steadfast that buyers can make their own choices. Therefore, I feel it my job to make sure we’re all aware of what’s in our hygiene products! Have you looked up the products you’re using on Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database? I bet you’ll be surprised to learn what’s in them and how they harm your health! Years ago I switched over most of my hygeine routine in a series I called Skintervention. At the time, the only products I was aware of were the department store brands that I’d come to love – full of toxins – or very natural brands that meant I was rubbing (stinky) fermented cod liver […]

The Value of Good Friends

The Value of Good Friends

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

When I was married, I leaned on my husband for friendship and support and asked his opinion on almost all matters. A problem with the kids or work and I went to him first for his take. Girlfriends were always around and important but not the ones that I went to first or listened to the most. Then I got divorced. What a change for me! For awhile, I would call my ex-husband and ask him for his opinion on some things like changing the tires on the car or what good movies were playing. I had a hard time letting go and finding me.

Slowly I realized that I needed to make my own way and find friends who would have my best interests. I still spoke to girlfriends that lived far away and they were always there for me but I needed women who lived where I did. After I divorced, I moved out to Denver and lived with my oldest son for 6 weeks while I got on my feet. I then moved to Boulder not knowing a soul. I moved into my wonderful little house on a warm sunny day. December 1st and all was well. The next morning I woke up to the threat of a huge snow storm coming in that would last for days. I remember that my car was not ready for snow and even has rear wheel drive; a huge "no no" if you want to be safe on the roads driving in Colorado. I remember feeling so alone and isolated wondering what I had done. I survived the snow storm, lonely but safe. I was grateful for the little things!

I remember feeling so lonely. A smile from the mail lady made my day! I started to venture out though, looking for what I wanted to do. I found a church and went by myself which I had never really done before. I always had kids or a husband to go with. Now the kids were grown and the husband was gone! I prayed for a new best girlfriend. It seemed like a stretch and it didn't happen immediately. I waited for months and stayed on the lookout! Soon God gave me the women who have become my closest friends. I also had one of my "before divorce" girlfriends move out to Boulder, who is a huge blessing and support for me!

I decided to start a girls night once a month at my house. It started at Christmas time, gathering to make cookies. It was so much fun, that we decided to meet once a month and "do" a craft, like painting. So much good has come out of those gatherings! I am realizing the wonderful gift of female friendship. They can hear any problem, laugh with me or share my pain. They bring healthy encouragement to my life and I am forever grateful. If you feel lonely, ask for a friend and hopefully soon, you will realize that women friends rock!

Girls Empowerment Network

You probably saw Dove's new "Real Beauty Sketches" video all over social media the past few days- we posted it on facebook ourselves yesterday. The video shows a number of women describing themselves to a sketch artist who does not actually see their faces, and then being described to the sketch artist by other women. The difference in the sketches demonstrates the way we often fixate on our flaws, blowing them up in our minds until they are all we see when we look in the mirror. Strangers are much kinder to us than we are to ourselves. Not a bad message, and important to remember. A number of commentators have pointed out some concerns with the video, however, and they're important to keep in mind as well. You might have noticed the main participants don't stray far from conventional standards of beauty (white, tall, young, thin) , and women of color are on the screen for less than ten seconds of the six minute video. My BEAUTYCOUNTER Obsession – Safer Skincare & Better Beauty

by Stacy @ Real Beauty – Real Everything

When I was a teen my mom told me the #1 most important beauty secret was to moisturize. “This will prevent wrinkles from forming, and keep your skin young – which is easier than trying to reverse aging!” She said. Like all immortal 16yo I ignored her wise advice. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when I adopted a natural beauty routine and noticed my mom’s skin seemed to be better than mine – even at her age – I realized I should have listened sooner. I was using coconut oil as my daily moisturizer, and frankly the residue left on my skin after removing my makeup wasn’t quite cutting it. At the time I tried a bunch of different solutions and decided a face balm made of Shea butter and fermented cod liver oil was my safest and best bet. So I put it on every night before bed. And while my skin did improve, the stuff was nasty. My poor husband… And to make matters worse, while my overall skin improved, my forehead wrinkles were getting worse. That’s what drove me to look for something else recently; I’m turning 35 this year, and I don’t want to […]

Backpacking Italy - Follow Up

Backpacking Italy - Follow Up

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Recently I traveled to Italy, taking only a backpack. I have since come home and realize that I have a greater appreciation for America and all of our benefits in this country and also the little things that make my house a home. Don’t get me wrong, I had a marvelous time and found the people in Italy to be warm and generous. I am just happy to be home.

The backpack that I took was wonderful. I kept the weight of the pack to about 20 pounds knowing that I would be walking with it for up to 30 minute stretches traveling to 5 different cities.

I flew into Venice airport, walked 15 minutes to a water taxi and got dropped off at the top of the island. That was the last taxi I took until the morning I left for the airport 17 days later! There are no cars in Venice. There are a lot of small narrow alleys that they call streets. It took 20 minutes of walking (after only 2 hours of sleep) to find my small hotel. It felt great to put the pack down. I must have walked 10 miles that first day, without the pack, trying to stay awake. It was painful, but helped me quickly get on Italian time, which was 8 hours ahead of mine.

I thought when I packed, that I had covered all the bases. If you asked me when I left if I packed the most necessary but minimum things, I would have given an emphatic “yes”. I learned some things though. Basically, I got by with less clothes than I brought but also craved other things like hair conditioner, my flatiron and perfume.

I found that I used my black capri pants each night with basic solid colored sleeveless tops. The restaurants are hot! I also wore a black sweater jacket walking to and from dinner. I dressed up my dinner look with colorful silk scarves (I don't wear them here in the states but loved them over there.) I brought 2 solid color dresses and 2 black skirts that I hardly wore. I wished that I had brought black short boots. Some dinners were a 30 minute walk and it rained a lot over there. I used black sneakers but would have felt more dressed up and fit in better with black boots.

I was happy with my day outfits which were walking shoes, capri pants with pockets and a tee shirt with a long sleeved pullover. I felt best with muted colors and didn't use my bright colors very often. My small over the shoulder purse was priceless as was my raincoat!

Since I have come home, I realized that I should have been easier on myself. Bringing less clothes and shoes made me feel denied and punished. I went too far “staying minimal” and for the next trip will bring some more “stuff” that makes me feel more at home no matter where I am!

Fragel’s Story: My Dad was Killed in a Home Invasion

by Story Submission @ TheHopeLine

This is a story about my dead dad as a poem that he wrote me one night.  I was really down one night and missed him a lot. The time we spent together was short, see…when I was only 12 years old, an evil person took my dad away from me. This evil person came...

Let’s Have a Social & let’s lose the stigma: October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Beautycounter Special

by Stacy @ Real Beauty – Real Everything

Today I want to talk about the how I’m contributing to October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month with a HUGE safer skincare special sale (end of the post). I want to talk about how the majority of skincare products that we all use in the US – not just ourselves but also on our kids – are linked to cancer. But first, I have to address the elephant in the room. If you don’t need to hear it, just skim to the Cliffnotes. Yes, it’s technically an MLM brand. What I’m learning, after sharing my love of Beautycounter with the world last month, is that there is a negative connotation with the brand. Today at a health conference I had an Emmy nominated professional make-up artist tell me she loved Beautycounter’s products but didn’t feel comfortable promoting the brand “because it’s MLM, and I just don’t like that.” I get it. Sincerely. I myself was turned off by the brand at first, too. Hearing and seeing everyone I knew talk about it was somehow off-putting. And then I found out it was a “multi-level-marketing” company and didn’t want to support that. But here’s the thing, it’s not what you think. There’s […]

Here’s what you’ll find in this week’s newsletter: Recipes and cookbooks that are FULL OF FLAVOR! A discount code for gluten-free empanadas from Cassava Chicago (my fave!! and they ship!!) My birthday trip to California and the AMAZING things I learned. Our Real Life We recently went on our annual trip to one of our favorite u-pick farms for fresh produce, a family adventure together, and lots and lots of apples. There’s something magical about fresh farm air, sunlight, and getting in touch with the food we eat. With gorgeous weather we actually did 3 full laps around the farm, getting 1 1/2 bushels of apples! And then we made our absolute favorite The Best Apple Crisp, and Smoke Vault Chicken, which were a huge hit with friends and neighbors. A long weekend at home with family, good food, and relaxation was just what we all needed! I landed in California last week on Thursday for a weekend with Beautycounter– a trip I earned thanks to all of you. I appreciate your love and support… and our shared obsession with gorgeous skin and lashes so much! If you’ve chosen me as your Beautycounter consultant, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know there are a lot of […]

Reflections of 2016

Reflections of 2016

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

I have learned so much since moving to New York and I wanted to share some of it in celebration of 2016 coming to a close.

I find that I am happy and thriving in the heart of New York City even though I am such a nature girl and animal lover. I do like to get out of the city at least one weekend a month for my sanity. It seems to ground me and let me be able to enjoy NYC all the more.

I look back on 2016 and am amazed at myself for the big LIFE steps I have taken. I wonder why I am not only okay with the big life changes but really happy and thriving. So I asked myself what I have learned in 2016 and why learning is so important to me.

I find that I need to grow and learn new things to stay happy. I find I do not want to be stagnant. I left my small town where I grew up just two days after turning 18 to move to NYC and start a new career. Two days after that, I hopped on a plane to Rome and Paris for the collections with Harpers Bazaar. Just days after that I had my first magazine cover for Harper’s Bazaar Italia. That was a busy month! The whole 18 years before that I had been existing in comfort; the same town with the same friends and stores and neighborhoods. How could I just take off and make such big life decisions at 18 and be fine with it? I actually do not know the answer to that but I not only survived, I thrived!

I look back at all the people I have had the privilege to meet since I moved back to NYC this past summer. In the last 3 months, I have met the most creative, interesting people who are genuinely kind and caring. I have met people with different beliefs than I have from numerous countries all over the world and find that they are easy and wonderful people to talk to. I also ma able to approach beggars in the street and have conversations with them and treat them like real people. I used to be scared of them!

I don’t seem to mind putting myself into new situations by attending events alone. Last night I walked into a ballroom at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a Policeman's Charity Ball. I was unaccompanied but meeting the friend and his wife who was putting the event on. I met many new people and enjoyed myself and found that I was okay and I could still be happy alone. I wanted to be with people helping out the charity event instead of being home.

So, I have learned that I don’t need a man to make me happy. I love people. I love to grow and learn. I try to find the good in others. I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings my way. How about you?

Pregnant Kylie Jenner Flashes a Bit of Her Baby Bump and Poses in a Bathrobe with Her Girlfriends

Pregnant Kylie Jenner Flashes a Bit of Her Baby Bump and Poses in a Bathrobe with Her Girlfriends

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

Kylie Jenner is teasing the first signs of a baby bump.

The 20-year-old reality star, who is expecting her first child with beau Travis Scott, shared a glimpse of her stomach in an Instagram photo wishing her BFF Jordyn Woods a happy birthday. In the photo — which was taken on Friday but uploaded on Sunday — Jenner rests her hand on her waist, slightly lifting her baggy black sweatshirt to expose a glimpse of her stomach.

“Yesterday was cute,” Jenner captioned the image with Woods and a giraffe. “Hope you had the happiest of birthdays Jordy. Love you forever ever and beyond..”

The makeup mogul posted another photo with several girlfriends on Sunday, where they’re all posing in white bath robes.

“Mornings,” she simply captioned the mirror selfie with a happy face.

One day after sources confirmed to PEOPLE that she is pregnant, Jenner headed to Las Vegas to watch him perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who is expecting a baby girl in February, covered up her bump with an oversized black t-shirt and brown plastic pants.

From a VIP platform, Jenner watched Scott, 25, perform with DJ Khaled, Chance The Rapper, Demi Lovato and French Montana at the T-Mobile Arena.

Scott and Jenner are both exciting about becoming new parents.

“It is an unexpected but completely amazing turn of events that she could not be more excited or thrilled about,” a source previously said.

“Everyone is overjoyed for her,” the source added. “This is the happiest she’s ever been.”

Another insider said Scott began telling friends about the pregnancy in July. “He was so excited he couldn’t keep it in,” says the insider. “He’s been so affectionate and protective of Kylie since they found out. He can’t wait to be a dad.”

Jenner has been dating Scott since earlier this year.

Her baby won’t be the only new member joining the famous KarJenner brood: older sister Kim Kardashian West is also expecting via surrogate. Kardashian West shares two other children with husband Kanye WestSaint, who is 21 months old, and daughter North, who turned 4 in June.

Jenner’s also aunt to brother Rob Kardashian‘s daughter Dream, 10 months, and sister Kourtney Kardashian‘s three children: Mason, 7, Penelope, 5, and Reign, 2.

Modeling Days - Part II

Modeling Days - Part II

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

What did I learn at 18 walking the streets of New York looking to break into the modeling business? I'm not sure that I could tell you back then. Looking back now if you ask me what I learned, I can give you a big list. Hindsight can be a good thing.

I learned to accept myself the way I am right at this minute knowing that I can change but giving myself a break that it can't happen overnight. To accept that others will never be the way I want them to be. Each person is unique and it is not my job to change them. I learned to focus on the positive because if I focus on negatives, I fail in what I am trying to accomplish. I also know that I am much happier when I don't compare myself to others. Do not envy! I am the best me. I can't be someone else. All of these realizations come from having a healthy mind. When my mind is focusing on the right things, the the world seems like a good place. If I am having a bad day, I take the focus off of me and my circumstance and help someone else. That always makes me feel better.

I had to learn to let words roll off my back. I could pick up and use certain criticisms to grow in the business and let others fall to the ground. I was around experts all day long. Sometimes I worked with different people on up to three different jobs a day. many words and criticisms were harsh! Mean. But I could use those words to become better too! I was getting the best advice from the best in the world as long as I didn't take it to heart and let those words stab me right in my weak spots.

We all have weak spots. We all have things we need to work on. We are put into situations to test us and stretch us into better people or worse depending on how we handle things. Look at your situation today. Accept that you are right where were are supposed to be. Be thankful in your situation. You never know, but one day you may look back and realize that it was the best thing for you! Hindsight!

Confidence

Stand Your Ground

Stand Your Ground

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Stand Your Ground

When I first moved to NYC at eighteen, I had come from a small town and a quiet family that didn't argue much. Coming from a small town, I didn't know the meaning of fighting for space. Growing up with no conflict in my home, I didn't learn to stand up for myself the way other people had to, coming from either a bigger family in a smaller house or a family that loves to argue. Yes, there are families that love and thrive on arguing!

I was timid to say the least moving from my little hometown to the big city. I was also timid jumping into a new business that I didn't understand. My only photos taken of me growing up were simple ones where I didn't even know that I should be doing certain things to make the photo look better. I had also not really worn make up and I had long, straight hair that I left alone.

When I started working as a model in New York City I found that I stayed quiet a lot and just watched and learned from the experts in my business. I slowly learned what to do in front of the camera and how to put on my make up and do my hair and I became more confident. When I would hit the streets to either go on a casting or a new job, I found that I was always letting other people go by on the sidewalk and stepping aside anywhere else there were people fighting for space.

Years have gone by since then and I find myself back in New York City. I am back to stepping aside for others thinking I am being polite. No one seems to care. I find that I have to tell myself that I have a right to my space on the sidewalk and that I don't have to step aside or dip my shoulder in order not to hit someone. I have found that when I stand my ground, at the last minute people make way for me. It is a struggle though as my tendency is to not fight but to give way. I am finding it empowering to keep my course on the sidewalk and to not make the effort to give others more space.

You may come from being raised differently than me. Maybe you don't get the stepping aside thing. I find that some people don't even know or care that I let them go first. They expect it!

So, as a Christian woman, what is the right thing to do? My struggle is feeling that I am good enough. I always seems to come down to that. I have to tell myself that I don’t have to step aside for others but that if I chose to, then I am doing it for me, so that I feel better as a person. Who knows, maybe being polite will pay off!

Golf for a Cause

Golf for a Cause

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Golfing for a Cause It is that time of year where the weather is great and many charities have organized golf tournaments to raise money for their good causes. I just came back from a week of back to back golfing events that did just that, raise money! Many events have used celebrities to not only bring more interest to their events but also to get big clients in with their foursomes to be able to spend some time on the golf course with their favorite celebrity.

The first stop on my “golf tour” was in Santa Rosa, California for the Schultz Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by John O’Hurley, where I got to play on the beautiful Mayacama Golf course (one of the top 100 courses in the country) with Richard Coombs who helped to start the event and also Bruce McGill a wonderful actor. There was also a dinner the night before at the Francis Ford Coppola vineyard which was fabulous. Since the event started, they have raised over 5 million dollars for children charities in Sonoma County. One of the highlights of the event for me was a passionate speech by a young man who was practically homeless and talked about how the Catholic Charities helped to turn his life around due to the money raised at the event.

I then flew to Greenville, Mississippi in the Delta (which is hard to get to) for Steve Azar’s golf event. It was 2 days of golfing in the lovely Mississippi weather with some great people. Steve had some terrific musicians who could also play golf so we were entertained for the whole weekend. Much needed money was raised to help local children’s charities there. Steve has his own foundation called St. Cecilia Foundation at www.sascf.org http://www.sascf.org/. It was my third year attending and I had a great time meeting new friends and seeing old ones. My golf game improved on the course as it was flat and not a lot of places to get in trouble!

I left super early Sunday morning to drive hours to the nearest airport to catch 2 planes to get up to Nebraska where my final event was for Larry the Cable Guy. It was the Git-R-Done Golf Classic and it was filled with laughs and some great people. I had never been to Nebraska before and found the town and the people to be lovely. I got to play with friends of mine from the American Century Golf event in Lake Tahoe, Jonathan and Cyndi Thomas. I played that event last year with 90 other celebrities and came in last place with even Charles Barkley beating my final score! (I had just started to golf after taking 35 years off to raise kids)

My Surprising Beautycounter Trip + the launch of Healthy Inside & Out YouTube Channel

This weekend was my 36th birthday, and I gave myself the gift of attending Beachside at Biltmore – a Beautycounter trip. OK – hold off on running away and freaking out. I know some of you roll your eyes and scroll when you see “Beautycounter”. If that’s you – can you PLEASE READ. I’ve even created a video talking about this if you prefer that format (see below)! ♥ I had the privilege of attending training about the brand. Here’s my favorite visual: these are the product leads at BC. In Xavier Ormancey’s lap, the thin folder required by the FDA for new products to enter the US market. In his hand, the huge binder of testing for their latest product, Countermatch. “No one else in the market is screening EVERY final product for heavy metals and sending EVERY single new product through formal 3rd party University-level research for endocrine disrupters.” Many of you think the brand you use is great and safe. Do they test for heavy metals? What sourcing standards do they use? Are the a certified B Corp, focused on people and planet? These are why I have become an advocate for a brand that once made […]

Modeling Day - Part I

Modeling Day - Part I

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

"Here", the photographer said as he slid my portfolio back across the table.

"Really?", I thought. He didn't even look up. How could I break my neck to get here, learning new streets, taking the hot subway just to get here on time and this photographer doesn't even look at me?

I was on a go see. That was what breaking into modeling was like when I first started that hot summer in New York City over 32 years ago. I had grown up in a small town. I was successful in most everything I put my hand to. I was in the band, honor society, a church youth group and the swim team. I swam 5 1/2 hours a day and still found time to make great grades in school. I was a people pleaser. I found value in my performance. i enjoyed doing things to the best of my ability and I had been successful....until now.

What was wrong with me? I was 18, in New York City alone trying to fit into a job that I never dreamed of doing. A job that others would die for. I thought I had my life planned out. I was accepted into the pharmacy program at University of Rhode Island in the fall of my senior year.

Now here I was, all hot and sweaty finding my way around NYC this summer I graduated high school while all my friends were laughing, partying and having a stress free summer before college. They weren't counting calories or worrying about their looks. They weren't lost in the Big Apple, trying to find their way in a new job that they didn't even want. What was I doing? Most days, I felt depressed, lonely, isolated and hungry.

Don't get my wrong. I was blessed; I just didn't feel it some days back then. It was hard, lonely work. I would have days where the agency would send me on "go sees" all day. I would have a list of addresses to find and a certain time to show up. Go sees were a way to get jobs but after walking the streets, taking subways and taxis just to get to a certain studio, I would find it hard to look good. I would go from studio to studio. Some were nice others were really busy. As I walked into studios, I never really knew who was important, who I should talk to. Each studio was different. Some had models all made up on set, looking cool and collected as I stood there waiting, feeling harried and very much an outsider. I fought the feeling of rejection a lot back then. My day could be ruined from a bad reaction to my portfolio. Was it me? Do I belong here? Funny enough, some of the rudest people, the ones the didn't look me in the eye, were the very ones who booked me while the ones who spent time talking and laughing with me didn't necessarily mean future work.

For more on my modeling story you can purchase my book, "A Model for a Better Future" available on Amazon.

What is

What is "Real Beauty"?

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Have you ever noticed people who seem to carry a dark cloud over them? I have. They walk into a room and there is an immediate feeling of doom. I have also noticed that there are other people who seem to be happy no matter what the circumstance. These are the kinds of people I tend to gravitate to as I like to be around people who have a positive outlook.

Have you ever looked at the face of someone who are negative? It seems that the phrase “sour puss” was meant for them. They tend to have more worry lines on their face and wear a permanent scowl. Then there are people who carry that inner light in them of happiness and joy. The phrase “sunny smile” or “bright disposition” seems to fit them. Their skin seems to be glowing and healthy and even if there are wrinkles, they seem to be lines that speak of life and living well. They walk into a room and it seems to brighten with goodness and purpose.

Why am I talking about grumps and happy people in a beauty article???

I believe that our inner thoughts can affect our outer beauty. After all, beauty is not only about how you look in the physical. It is about how you make others feel. Experiencing beauty in others often involves perceiving them to be in balance and harmony with nature. When we view beauty or what we think is beautiful, we tend to feel a sense of well being. All is right with the world. Beauty is a characteristic of HOW something or someone makes you feel.

Ideal beauty is meant to be admired. We all have our ideas of what is beautiful; in art, nature and people. We have the phrase, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” but there seems to be a standard through the centuries for what exactly is beautiful. One trait that stands the test of time is symmetry. Lacking flaws or the absence of genetic or acquired defects; which as far as viewing people goes includes well proportioned bodies and young, smooth skin. Some of us are way past young, smooth skin but are still beautiful.

From what I have found to be true, beauty not only consists of the outer features but also that inner personality and intelligence, grace and morality. Elegance in any situation life throws at you is also important in determining a form of beauty. People, who are elegant, graceful and morally balanced on the inside, generate a sense of beauty on the outside.

Beauty also presents a standard for comparison and can generate feelings of jealousy and inferiority. We spend millions of dollars in this country alone, trying to be more beautiful. Some of us forget our own beautiful traits while only focusing on other peoples unattainable traits. This leads to misery in my mind. Each one of us has a desire to “fit in” and being beautiful is one way to be popular.

Think of this the next time you wish you looked differently. Does beauty on the outside mean beautiful on the inside? Does beauty on the inside mean beautiful on the outside? You were given certain traits that are beautiful. You decide what is really important and lasting. My life is spent seeking both inner and outer beauty. How about you?

2 Separate National Anthem Singers Take a Knee in Protest During NFL Games After Trump’s Tirade

2 Separate National Anthem Singers Take a Knee in Protest During NFL Games After Trump’s Tirade

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

On Sunday, two national anthem singers — one in Detroit and one in Tennessee — chose to take a knee during their performances.

In Detroit, Rico Lavelle who sang the national anthem before the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons game, ended his performance by taking a knee.

Over in Tennessee, The Voice runner-up Meghan Linsey performed ahead of the Sunday game between the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks and also took a knee after finishing the song.

Both the Titans and the Seahawks protested the national anthem and stayed in their locker rooms for the performance.

The Seahawks released a statement minutes before kickoff about their decision saying, “as a team we have decided we will not participate in the national anthem. We will not stand for the injustice that has plagued people of color in this country.”

“Out of love for our control and in honor of the sacrifices made on our behalf, we unite to opposite those that would deny our most basic freedoms. We remain committed in continuing to work towards equality and justice for all,” added the team.

The Titans also issued a statement saying, “As a team, we wanted to be unified in our actions today. The players jointly decided this was the best course of action. Our commitment to the military and our community is resolute and the absence of our team for the national anthem shouldn’t be misconstrued as unpatriotic.”

In a video posted by the team, the players can be seen walking onto the field with their arms linked together in solidarity.

The Seahawks also shared a photo of their team walking onto the field with linked arms, captioned with the word “unity.”

The NFL is taking a united stand after Donald Trump called for the firing of basketball and football stars like Colin Kaepernick who have chosen to protest the national anthem by taking a knee.

On Sunday, NFL players put on a united front as over 100 players linked arms, knelt, or simply stayed in the locker room during the national anthem during several games.

Governor General of Canada Thinks It Would Be ‘Marvelous’ If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Got Married

Governor General of Canada Thinks It Would Be ‘Marvelous’ If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Got Married

by Stephanie Petit @ PEOPLE.com

Add another person to the list of those helping Meghan Markle and Prince Harry someday marry!

David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, told ITV that the romance is strengthening ties between the U.K. and Canada, where the American actress films her show Suits and has adopted as a second home.

“I think it would be quite marvellous and I hope it would be quite marvellous for him and obviously it will help to bring us together,” Johnston said. “But, you know, that reflects so many of the people-to-people ties that are so strong. I think about 20% of our citizens would claim British heritage so those ties are very strong.”

Johnston said that he “didn’t know” that Markle, 36, was sitting near him at the opening ceremonies for the Invictus Games in Toronto.

“ was alone but you say, I gather, there was a young lady in the audience who was watching him with great interest,” he said.

RELATED VIDEO: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s History (So Far)

Markle was all smiles as she cheered on the athletes in the Paralympic-style Invictus Games for wounded service members from around the world. Meanwhile, Harry sat a few rows away next to First Lady Melania Trump whom he met with earlier in the day.

Toronto has become a special place for the couple. Harry made a secret detour from the Caribbean to spend time with Markle in her adopted hometown in December. The royal couple also spent Easter weekend together in Toronto. Harry also called Toronto a “home away from home” when he met with Johnston.

“Despite the distance, the media attention and everything else, there’s a real ease to their relationship,” a source previously told PEOPLE. “It just works. They are deeply happy.”

Still Running

Still Running

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

As many of you know, I grew up swimming. From the age of 6 on, I swam at my local YMCA 3 days a week with swim meets taking up every Saturday until I hit high school. Then in high school, things picked up. I had daily swims and then “two a days” swimming and lifting weights (51/2 hours a day). It was hard work but it paid off in more ways than just winning races. Our girls’ swim team was undefeated for the four years I swam there! It taught me a great work ethic and the never give up attitude that still stays with me to this day.

It was easy to stay in swimming even when things got intense because it was a family affair during my years at the Y and then all my girl friends were on my same team in high school.

Then, after graduation, things changed. I no longer had a support system to continue swimming with friends, as none of us wanted to even see a pool! I also didn't have a coach to push me. I didn't have weekend events planned around swim meets. Instead, I was discovered and moved to NYC right out of high school to live on my own in the “Big City” and start in the modeling world.

Not only did the modeling world want me thin, (so I didn't and couldn't eat much) but it wasn't easy to find a pool to work out in and I didn't want the muscles. I had starved the muscles off when I was discovered during my senior year of high school.

Now I had a problem, I had grown up with a swim family to support me so I felt alone in New York City and I was used to working out regularly. Back in the 1970’s, there weren't as many gyms and frankly, I didn't know what to do with myself with no coach yelling at me and telling me my workout routine. I realized that I had a body that was used to hard exercise to stay fit and happy.

It took me awhile to find a new exercise to love (because pools and the smell of chlorine didn’t hold as much appeal). I finally found a way to stay in shape and be able to do it almost anywhere in the world; running! I started to run when I was 21 years old and after being an athlete for all of those years, couldn't run for more than a couple of minutes without getting a stitch in my side. What a wimp! I would walk and run until I had gone 3 miles or 30 minutes when I first started and then one day, I found that I didn't have to stop; I ran the whole 3 miles without feeling horrible and  actually felt good! From then on, I added miles and started to run races. I had always been competitive and running races was a good fit for me!

I never dreamed of running a marathon but a friend flew into town back in January of 1985 to run the Jacksonville Marathon. I went with him to the expo to get his race packet for the race and got the marathon “bug”. He asked me to run part of the race with him to keep him company and I ended up running the whole thing and crossed the finish line with him in a 4:35 or so! That was it, I was hooked!

Right after that, Fred Lebow hired me to be was the spokesperson for the New York City Marathon. I ran my first of 5 New York Marathons in 1986, 6 months after giving birth to my first son.

Now, over 30 years later, I still find that I love to run. It makes me feel good about myself. I am blessed that all my joints and bones are still healthy and that I can get out and run wherever I am in the world. I hope you have found a sport that you still love to do!

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

by mariayagoda @ PEOPLE.com

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Eating Girl Scout Cookies at the Oscars Is the Internet’s Best New Meme

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Goop

The beauty of a portrait—an artist’s perspective on a particular person—is especially poignant in our age, where so much of visual culture is about self-perception and definition. But the portraits painted by Alice Neel—a white artist who moved to Harlem in the 30s and broke from the traditions of Western art by painting people of color, from her friends, lovers, and neighbors to prominent political and thought leaders—would speak to anyone, no matter what the time period they were living in.

Why Chocolate Is A HEALTH Food + Our Favorite Recipes

Yes! This week is all about it, including the health benefits of good-quality dark chocolate! This, plus all the feels as summer wrapped up and the boys headed back to school, in this week’s newsletter! Our Real Life Every summer I’m like “don’t let perceptions of your body ruin your life.” That doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with those feels. In fact, if usually means I just had to tackle them myself. When I hurt my back, I was horizontal for nearly 2 years as I rested to heal, and then gained a bunch of weight as my body adjusted from being an athlete and the associated depression. I’m finally out of that fog, feeling better & like myself again. But this was a day where, when as I stared at the dock, I had all those “you can’t” and “you shouldn’t” voices in my head. We all have the days where we don’t see ourselves in our best light. You know the best way to conquer them? Do the bravest thing you can think of! You bet I jumped off this 20′ dock. This is my favorite time of year- the sweaters and boots have come out, and it’s APPLE EVERYTHING season!! Hold the pumpkin spice for just a little bit longer… we’re still celebrating apples over here! Last weekend we went on our annual trip to one of our favorite u-pick farms for fresh produce, a family adventure together, and lots and lots of fresh-picked apples. And then we promptly made our absolute favorite The Best Apple Crisp, which was a huge hit with friends and neighbors. If you’re missing that non-runny, soft & supple apple-y underside and crisp buttery topping, don’t miss that recipe too! There’s something magical about fresh farm air, sunlight, and getting in touch with the food we eat. With gorgeous weather we actually did 3 full laps around the farm, getting 1 1/2 bushels of apples as well as you-cut flowers and some veggies from the garden, including the tomatoes Wesley straight up ate like an apple when he happened upon them. If you, like us, are *squeeing* from excitement of apple crisp and apple butter – allow us to blow your mind one step further with… Apple Butter BBQ Sauce! Happy and Single at Christmas

Happy and Single at Christmas

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Coming out of Christmas Happy!

Christmas ended up being different this year after being divorced for the last 3 years. I came back to the town I last lived in while married and raising the kids. I have moved around to different cities to live in the last 38 years since I left my parents house to move to New York City to model, so I didn't have solid traditions. Once I got married though, at 25, I always had my husband or kids with me to take care of and celebrate Christmas with.

This year, everything was different as I was single with no husband and grown children with lives of their own. It was hard to come back to a place with so many memories, especially at Christmas time. I wanted to be with family though and 2 of my 3 sons were here as well as my sister and my parents. I have been divorced for 3 years and this is the first Christmas that I have been strong enough to come back to all the memories.

If you have not been through divorce you may not understand what I am talking about but to all of us who are trying to rebuild a life after divorce, coming back can be difficult. To "get though" Christmas, I found that I had to prepare to be alone for some of it and not really have any expectations as I knew I didn't want to be disappointed. I was trying to guard my emotions.

I came down for a week and ended up staying at 3 separate friends houses. Focusing on that right there makes me so grateful and blessed that I had those options opened and friends who cared enough to see me  even though I moved away and our friendships changed.

I tried to see my sons as much as I could and work around them and their schedules this past week. I recognized that I raised them to be independent and if they were busy, I chose to feel confident that I raised happy, healthy kids who had a life instead of feeling neglected by them. I want them to have their own lives. I didn't want to put pressure on them just because I was down for a visit. And it was Christmas. It ended up working out really well and I had a great time with both of them.

Christmas can be such a tough time for so many. I learned to enjoy each moment and situation as it comes. To tried to make plans to see people but also to understand when schedules change. It is a matter of being comfortable with yourself no matter what and to focus on the real reason for Christmas. It isn't delivering presents or getting them as much as it is celebrating the birth of Jesus and the love of family whatever the situation. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas also.

Self Promotion

Self Promotion

by Kim Alexis @ Inauguration Ball Preparation - KIM ALEXIS

Self Promotion! ...I am writing this article to vent a bit. I find that our country has become more and more self promoting… Everyone seems to be selling something and nothing seems to be free anymore. It is impossible to watch TV shows without more commercials than show… Our emails have become burdened with promotions; almost everywhere we turn, someone is selling something. News articles, doctors advice, “how to” sites ALL have ways to promote at the bottom of the article. Everyone wants to “SHARE”…We are inundated with too much information and it comes at a cost!

It seems that we slid into a self absorbed people… Looking back, I don't think we were this bad. It is all about “what can you do for me” or “look at me” or “look at me while you buy this product”! I have grown sick of it even though marketing and advertising has been the basis of my modeling business the last 38 years I have been working. It seems to be everywhere we look as do TV shows that highlight the worst of our human nature for all the world to see…people have become famous for what show they are on rather than for strong skills. Companies are hiring people to represent their products based on how many “FRIENDS’ they have verses how much talent they have. The reality shows are all about “look at me”.

I have started to feel guilty if I spend too much time on social media. It is hard based on what I did for work not to have pictures that say, “Look at me”. Social media can also burn up so much time out of my day. I know that I have better things to do; enjoy nature on a long walk, find people to engage with, write articles that really help people (with no strings attached)! I want to feel useful not self absorbed!

Even when I was in Italy, there were too many people with “selfie sticks” taking photos on front of everything. It ruined it for me and I didn't want to take my photo at all. I think I am in 4 pictures out of the hundreds that I took while in Italy and I definitely didn't buy a selfie stick even though hundreds were offered to me. I was more interested in the historical treasure I was visiting and wanted to read all about the history of it, than taking a photo in front of it.

I have sent out newsletters for year and years and now blogs. I just want to share what I have learned in all the years of working and meeting the most interesting people. So, if I am so big on helping others, why this article? I think that more and more people feel the same way and I want to encourage you to go out and make a difference to someone else and find ways to be less self absorbed. Ciao.

by Stacy @ Real Beauty – Real Everything

Years ago on the blog, inspired by Oprah, I’d go all “Stacy’s favorite things” giveaway and enjoy the clicking of a random number generating shouting “and you get a car! and you get a car!” except it was “and you get a book! and you get a kitchen tool!” It’s been too long, friends. I’ve been giving thanks over in my Healthy Inside & Out Facebook group with a week of giveaways (4 are posted over there right now!). Click above to go enter the other 4 giveaways over in my Facebook Group! The thanks is for a year of working with this community and as a result getting to go on a fantastic trip for my birthday. Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.
